Newark Catholic’s Gibson, Watkins Memorial’s Cassady take top LCL softball honors

NEWARK — The Watkins Memorial and Newark Catholic softball teams each made history this spring, winning Licking County League championships.

The Warriors completed their fourth consecutive unbeaten run through the LCL, winning the Buckeye Division. The Green Wave won the Cardinal Division, their first LCL title since the league re-formed before the 2014 season.

Watkins senior ace right-hander Carsyn Cassady was named the Buckeye Player of the Year. Watkins’ Mike Jellison was named the Coach of the Year.

NC senior leadoff hitter Kylie Gibson was named the Cardinal Player of the Year. NC’s Logan Depriest was named the Coach of the Year.

Joining Cassady on the Buckeye first team are Watkins teammates Jordyn Wycuff, Cortney Dobbs and Kendal Tellings, Granville’s Ally Ernsberger, Megan Lodge and Emily Travis, Licking Valley’s D’Neya Dennis and Taylor Penick, Licking Heights’ Alissa West and Lydia Rauch and Zanesville’s Kierra Joseph.

Joining Gibson on the Cardinal first team are NC teammates Kami Diaz, Maris Knowlton and Veronica Bailey, Heath’s Kyndall Spicer, Shelby Moore and Savannah Lawson, Utica’s Emily Meyers, Cheyenne Smith and Lauren Schmitt, Lakewood’s Dani Stewart and Becca Streets, Johnstown’s Addy Zak and Northridge’s Addison Moore.

Named to the Buckeye second team are Watkins’ Maleya Thompson, Alli Langwasser, Ava McKee and Kyliee Trouten, Granville’s Sophia Patena, Taylor Warehime and Avary King, Valley’s Abbe McNabb and Tori Baughman, Heights’ Ava Von Bargen and Lily Meidl and Zanesville’s Jaliyah Edwards.

Named to the Cardinal second team are NC’s Avery Nagel, Addison Gerber, Emma Lohri and Joanna Bailey, Heath’s Kylie Green, Sydney Cottrell and Karli Staley, Utica’s Karleigh Lees and Lexi Wiegand, Lakewood’s Lauren Griffith, Cora Redman and Rachel Crist, Johnstown’s Jenna Hochanadel and Northridge’s Kenzie Hannahs.

Named to the Buckeye honorable mention list are Watkins’ Carlie Taggart, Granville’s Alyssa Guglielmi, Valley’s Addison Justice, Heights’ Chesney McPeck and Zanesville’s Maggie Murgatroyd.

Named to the Cardinal honorable mention list are NC’s Jahni Whitney, Heath’s Kristal Keeran, Utica’s Kiersten Hull, Lakewood’s Carly Williams, Johnstown’s Riley Stefanick and Northridge’s Gracie Smith.
