Netflix Reveals Live-Action Yu Yu Hakusho Series Release Date

Two years ago, Netflix announced a live-action adaptation of the legendary manga Yu Yu Hakusho at the Netflix Japan Festival. After almost total silence in the time since, the streaming giant has released a new teaser for the series, and a release date that’s surprisingly soon.

Netflix tweeted out a new teaser trailer for Yu Yu Hakusho today, though the teaser is not particularly substantial. It’s about 10 seconds long, and simply shows the logo for the series with a very energetic and glowy background. At the end of the teaser is a Yu Yu Hakusho release date: December 14, 2023.

Yup, despite having next to zero information released prior to today, the series is just two months away at the time of writing. More details were given out on Netflix’s new post about the series, where the company says that fans can expect to see “their favorite characters in ways that have never been seen before.”

Netflix says that the series has been worked on by Scanline VFX, which it says is “the most innovative VFX studio in the world,” and has taken five years to complete production. It also promises that it “took the same level of commitment to quality and authenticity” that it took with its live-action One Piece series, which is great news given how well that series turned out.

It would want to get it right, too, because Yu Yu Hakusho is very well beloved by manga and anime fans the world over. The manga tells the story of Yusuke Urameshi, a teenager who died and was then resurrected as a paranormal detective. It was turned into a very good anime in the early 90s, and has since had a bunch of movies, audio albums, video games, and more merch than you can shake a stick at.

Netflix hasn’t always hit the mark with its live-action adaptations. While the live-action One Piece series got off to a great start, the company’s Cowboy Bebop adaptation was not quite as good… to say the least. Hopefully, Yu Yu Hakusho is more like One Piece than Cowboy Bebop, but only time will tell.
