Netflix Is Reportedly Giving Away Its Massive DVD Collection

With DVDs now becoming a thing of the past, Netflix is shuttering its DVD library. However, there's good news for those who prefer physical media over streaming: Netflix is giving away free DVDs (for a short period of time).

According to one Twitter user, the Netflix DVD team sent an email to subscribers announcing the news and inviting them to sign up for their chance at a slice of the proverbial cake.

It reads, "After 25 years of movies in the mail, we're approaching the end of our final season. We really appreciate that you're sharing movie nights with us until the last day. Let's have some fun for the finale!"

The message notes that subscribers can decide by Aug. 29 if they want to receive extra DVDs with their next—and final—rentals, allowing them to get "up to 10 extra discs in your mailbox." The discs will be sent out by September 29th, which is the last shipping day. Netflix also notes that "you won't know if any extra envelopes are headed your way until they arrive in your mailbox."

The person who tweeted the news wrote, "A CHANCE to receive 10 BONUS envelopes at the end of next month?? I don't think I've ever clicked an opt-in button faster! Time to send this beauty of a service out with a bang!!"

Those who are already subscribers can claim their extra DVDs on Netflix's website.  As for whether customers can keep the extra DVDS after the rental program officially ends? There was some confusion online, as Netflix's website simply states, "We will continue to accept returns until October 27th, 2023."

"Still no clear indication if these extra discs need to be sent back," one customer on Reddit noted. Another chimed in, "That's a pretty sweet offer. I wonder if they expect to get them back?"

However, according to NPR, a Netflix spokesperson clarified that they will want the inventory back by the aforementioned return date.

Before becoming a streaming service, Netflix started out as a mail-based rental company, launching in 1997. It wasn't until 10 years later that it introduced its internet-based video-on-demand subscription.

Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos announced on April 18 that the DVD service would end after 25 years. "Our goal has always been to provide the best service for our members but as the business continues to shrink that’s going to become increasingly difficult," he wrote.

The CEO added, "Those iconic red envelopes changed the way people watched shows and movies at home — and they paved the way for the shift to streaming. From the beginning, our members loved the choice and control that direct-to-consumer entertainment offered: the wide variety of the titles and the ability to binge watch entire series. DVDs also led to our first foray into original programming — with Red Envelope Entertainment titles including Sherrybaby and Zach Galifianakis Live at the Purple Onion."
