Netflix has confirmed the release date for its new Bird Box movie Bird Box Barcelona with an intense teaser trailer.

The Spanish movie, which acts as a spin-off rather than a direct sequel to Netflix's 2018 hit Bird Box, will premiere on Netflix on July 14.

Set in the same universe as the original post-apocalyptic horror, which starred Sandra Bullock as Malorie, Bird Box Barcelona follows a father-daughter duo named Sebastian and Anna who team up with a group of survivors in search of safety.

As if the deadly monsters they're trying to evade aren't perilous enough, the group of survivors soon face a sinister new threat.

Directed by Àlex and David Pastor, who brought us the 2009 post-apocalyptic thriller Carriers, The Paramedic actor Mario Casas will star in the lead role as Sebastian alongside Barbarian star Georgina Campbell.

They are joined by Diego Calva, Alejandra Howard, Gonzalo de Castro, Michelle Jenner, Patrick Criado, Naila Schuberth, Leonardo Sbaraglia, Lola Dueñas and Celia Freijeiro.

Based on the book of the same name by author Josh Malerman, Bird Box saw Bullock's Malorie take on a perilous journey blindfolded with her two young children to save them from an unknown force that kills anyone who looks at it.

While fans have long been hoping for a follow up to the 2018 film, a direct sequel is yet to be confirmed – though Malerman is working on a sequel to the book titled Malorie.

"The Bird Box world is Malorie's story, and I wanted to know more about her. I wanted to get to know her even better. At the end of the movie, I turned to my girl Allison and said: 'I want to know what happens next!' And she's like: 'Well, you know, you could make that happen', so it really was this warm feeling." Malerman said.
