Netflix brings back Ukrainian President Zelenskyy’s show ‘Servant of the People’

They’re giving the people what they want.

The Ukrainian TV show that starred the country’s current president as a fictional president is back on Netflix.

“Servant of the People,” which was available from 2017 to 2021 and stars Volodymyr Zelenskyy, returned to the streaming service Wednesday.

“You asked and it’s back!” Netflix said in a tweet. “‘Servant of the People’ is once again available on Netflix in the U.S.”

“Servant of the People,” a satirical comedy about a teacher who becomes president, ran for three seasons in Ukraine, from 2015-2018. The show was wildly popular, but it had to stop when Zelenskyy decided to actually run for president. He won in a landslide in 2019 as a member of the Servant of the People party.

The show was sparsely known in the U.S. until Russia invaded Ukraine in late February, catapulting Zelenskyy to the world stage as the defiant leader of a battered nation. Broadcasters worldwide have been snapping up the rights to “Servant of the People” as Zelenskyy’s fame increased.

“Remember September 11, a terrible day in 2001, when evil tried to turn your cities — independent territories — into battlefields,” Zelenskyy told Congress on Wednesday, driving home American parallels to Ukraine’s plight. “Our country experiences the same every day, right now, at this moment.”

Before “Servant of the People” and his later rise to worldwide icon, Zelenskyy won Ukraine’s version of “Dancing With the Stars” in 2006 and voiced Paddington Bear in Ukrainian releases of the “Paddington” films.
