Who needs Boaty McBoatface? How Charlotte named bike lane sweeper Sweepy McSweepface

Charlotte’s new bike lane sweeper — in a display of true democracy — has been named by its constituents.

Say hello to Sweepy McSweepface when you see it on the streets.

The Charlotte powers that be had honored the votes cast after they asked the public to go online and hit the ballots with name suggestions May 3 through Thursday.

The name, no doubt, was inspired by the British Boaty McBoatface scandal of 2016.

The leading name wasn’t met with the same respect from the United Kingdom’s Natural Environment Research Council when it asked the public to name its newest vessel. Although the moniker topped leader boards, members tossed the fan-favorite out and instead named the vessel after naturalist David Attenborough.

Back across the pond, Charlotte officials revealed Sweepy McSweepface’s triumph over runner-up names Clearopathra and Sweep Caroline at the “Bike Charlotte After Work Social” event at the Innovation Barn Thursday evening.

The bike sweeper will clear debris from Charlotte’s bike lanes, which are out of the larger street sweepers’ reach.

The event, attended by Charlotte Department of Transportation staff and its Bicycle Advisory Committee members, also concluded Bike Month, which the League of American Bicyclists has been promoting since 1956, according to its website.

Earlier in the week, Reddit users week seemed to rally behind the wordsmith who crafted “Clearopathra.”

“Yeah, I’ve had enough of making things ‘Blanky McBlankface’. Clearopathra is actually good,” one user commented. The post, which shared the voting site, had more than 80 comments.

But Sweepy McSweepface satisfied enough people for the win.

“Thank god because if they chose Sweep Caroline I was going to move right out of this town,” one user commented on a WSOC tweet announcing the name.
