Nearly 25,000 gallons of sewage spilled in west Raleigh. Here’s what caused it.

Nearly 25,000 gallons of sewage overflowed from a manhole Wednesday in west Raleigh.

The spill at 0 Chapel Hill Road was reported at 9:23 a.m. and was caused by roots growing in the sewage pipe and manhole, according to a city of Raleigh news release.

Of the 24,800 gallons that spilled, about 13,700 gallons reached an unnamed creek in the Richland Basin. The spill was stopped about an hour later at 10:30 a.m.

Raleigh provides water and sewer services to more than 600,000 residents, including in Raleigh, Garner, Knightdale, Wake Forest, Wendell and Zebulon.
