*Major spoilers for Sex Education season 3 below!*

Season three of the hit Netflix show Sex Education started just as dramatically as season two ended — Jean struggled to tell Jakob that she is pregnant, Adam and Eric’s romance bloomed, and Otis confessed his love for Maeve in a voicemail that her neighbor Issac deleted.

Whew. It was a lot. Not to mention, the charming new headmistress failed at her attempt to put Moordale Secondary back on track once the students learned what she really had in store for the school.

But as Moordale’s brightest students fight for sexual positivity, banding together in the dramatic and wild climax of Opening Day before ending on some major cliffhangers, we were left begging for more Moordale. What is going to happen to Maeve and Otis? Even though they both decided they should see where things go, will they stay together after Maeve’s trip to America? We also heartbreakingly saw Eric and Adam break up in the final season 3 episode, with Eric explaining that they are in two different points in their journey of self-discovery.

So as we patiently wait for Sex Education season 4 to debut, here’s everything we know about the upcoming chapter, including cast details, premiere dates, plot, and trailers.

Is season 4 of Sex Education happening?

Yes! We can look forward to seeing the students of Moordale return for another term — however, season 4 of Sex Education will be its last 😢. On July 5, 2023, showrunner Laurie Nunn confirmed the news.

“Writing this feels bittersweet, as we’ve decided the fourth season will also be the final installment of our show,” she wrote in an Instagram announcement. “This was not an easy decision to make, but as the themes and stories of the new season crystallized, it became clear that this was the right time to graduate.”

Back in September 2021, Gillian Anderson, who plays Dr. Jean Milburn on the show, revealed that Sex Education will return for a fourth season, while the series’ official Twitter account posted the announcement in a Moordale News graphic.

But fans weren’t the only ones hoping for a fourth season. Prior to its confirmation, on-screen besties Asa Butterfield and Ncuti Gatwa shared in an interview with ELLE hoped for more episodes. In regard to Otis and Maeve, Asa “would like to see them... look at the bigger picture,” he said. “To explore themselves and to be more focused either on their relationship with themselves or their platonic relationships with their friends and family.”

The two also teased more scenes together. We can’t blame them — who wouldn’t want to see more of the Otis and Eric bromance?

Who is in the cast of Sex Education season 4?

We can expect to see a couple of changes in the cast once Sex Education returns to Netflix.

In August 2022, Netflix tweeted that Emmy Award-winner and Schitt’s Creek star Dan Levy joins the season 4 cast as Mr. Molloy, Maeve’s American tutor at her Ivy League college. According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter, Dan is one of seven new faces joining the beloved Netflix series, alongside Doctor Who’s Thaddea Graham, Kamikaze’s Marie Reuther, and newcomers Felix Mufti, Anthony Lexa, Alexandra James, and Imani Yahshua.

Prior to the news that season 4 will be the final chapter of Sex Education, Ncuti Gatwa, who plays Otis’s bestie Eric on the show, announced he’d be departing after this upcoming installment. “Last day. Last time. Bye bubs, thank you for all the lessons and for all the strength ✨,” Ncuti wrote alongside a photo of the door to his trailer at the time.

Back in April 2022, Bridgerton star Simone Ashley revealed on ITV’s This Morning that she is not returning as Olivia for season 4. Then, in July 2022, Patricia Allison (who played Otis’s friend Ola for three seasons) revealed to Capital XTRA that she will also not appear in the fourth season, due to scheduling conflicts.

The trend of departures sadly continued when Tanya Reynolds (who portrayed alien-loving Lily) announced her exit to Radio Times: “I loved every minute of it and I loved Lily with my whole entire heart. Three seasons was just a really perfect amount for me,” she said in a July 2022 interview.

But Tanya made it clear that leaving the show is the right decision. “It’s just the natural progression of these shows — when you have such big ensemble casts and so many characters, I think you have to let a few older characters go to make way for newer ones, which is absolutely the right thing, the way it should happen,” she continued.

But fear not: Other leads, including Asa Butterfield, Gillian Anderson, Ncuti Gatwa, and Emma Mackey, are set to return to Moordale for season 4.

When will season 4 of Sex Education come out?

After a long wait, Netflix confirmed that season 4 of Sex Education will debut on September 21, 2023. (Psst, basic Netflix subscriptions start at $9.99/month.)

What will season 4 of Sex Education be about?

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix describes season 4 of Sex Education as follows:

Following the closure of Moordale Secondary, Otis and Eric now face a new frontier — their first day at Cavendish Sixth Form College. Otis is nervous about setting up his new clinic, while Eric is praying they won’t be losers again. But Cavendish is a culture shock for all the Moordale students — they thought they were progressive but this new college is another level. There’s daily yoga in the communal garden, a strong sustainability vibe and a group of kids who are popular for being … kind?! Viv is totally thrown by the college’s student-led, non-competitive approach, while Jackson is still struggling to get over Cal. Aimee tries something new by taking an Art A Level and Adam grapples with whether mainstream education is for him. Over in the U.S., Maeve is living her dream at prestigious Wallace University, being taught by cult author Thomas Molloy. Otis is pining after her, while adjusting to not being an only child at home, or the only therapist on campus.

We also can expect to see what happens with Eric, Adam, and Rahim, as it seems there’s something brewing with Adam and Rahim. Hopefully we’ll discover the fate of Jean, Jakob, Joy, and Hope, as well, and of course, who the father of Jean’s baby is.
