OU’s Buchanan advances, Heindselman upended

OU will finish with its first All-American since 2021, thanks to Stephen Buchanan’s 2-1 victory over John Poznanski of Rutgers in tiebreaker overtime.

Buchanan escaped in the first tiebreaker and rode Poznanski for the full 30 seconds of the second tiebreaker for the win.

Buchanan will be back in action later Friday night.

At heavyweight, OU’s Josh Heindselman also got to extra time, but he was taken down by Ohio State’s Nick Feldman in sudden-victory overtime for an 8-5 decision. That ended Heindselman’s run one win short of All-America status.

Former Sooner Jake Woodley finished sixth in 2021, the last Sooner to earn All-America honors.

Izzak Olenjik an OSU All-American

He needed extra time to finish it off, but Oklahoma State 165-pounder Izzak Olejnik secured his All-America finish in his lone season as a Cowboy.

Olejnik’s takedown in sudden-victory overtime gave him a 9-6 win over Dean Hamiti, the No. 5 seed from Wisconsin.

Olejnik will be back in action later Friday night against eighth-seeded Antrell Taylor of Nebraska, with the winner moving to the consolation semifinals and the loser to the seventh-place match.

Daton Fix heading back to finals

It hasn’t been a traditionally dominant Daton Fix type of week, but the Oklahoma State super-senior is going back to the finals at the NCAA Championships.

Fix defeated Michigan’s fifth-seeded Dylan Ragusin 3-2 in tiebreaker overtime after Ragusin was penalized for a locked-hands call. Not only did Ragusin’s locked hands give Fix a penalty point to tie the score at 2, it also secured Fix’s lead in riding time, which would have given him the victory.

Because of that, Ragusin opted for a release to give Fix a 3-2 lead, but Ragusin could not secure a takedown in the final :07.

With that, Fix will get the shot he’s been waiting for — the 133-pound championship match against Rutgers’ Vito Arujau, who defeated Fix in the semifinals last year.

Fix won his quarterfinal and semifinal without scoring a takedown.

OSU’s Troy Spratley comes up short

Troy Spratley scored first, but Tanner Jordan scored most. Jordan, the No. 23 seed from South Dakota State, got taken down early, but scored a reversal before adding a takedown and nearfall points for a 9-3 win in the blood round.

Spratley, the No. 6 seed, is eliminated just short of a top-eight finish in his first appearance at the NCAA Championships.

The two had met twice previously this season, with Jordan winning a 9-8 decision at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, then Spratley taking a 7-3 decision when SDSU came to Stillwater for a dual.

Doucet eliminated in final match of session

A late takedown brought an end to the run for OSU heavyweight Konner Doucet with a 6-1 loss to Rutgers’ Yaraslau Slavikouski

That means the Cowboys will have four wrestlers remaining in the Friday night session, with Daton Fix and Dustin Plott in the semifinals and Troy Spratley and Izzak Olejnik in the blood rounds.

OU’s Josh Heindselman advances again

A third-period takedown carried OU heavyweight Josh Heindselman to a 4-2 decision over Bucknell’s Dorian Buckley.

That sends Heindselman into Friday night’s session, one win away from locking in All-America status. He and 197-pounder Stephen Buchanan are the only Sooners still alive in the bracket.

OSU’s Olejnik moves on

Thanks to a 7-2 decision over Brevin Cassella of Binghamton, OSU 165-pounder Izzak Olejnik is one win away from a top-eight finish.

Olejnik had a first-period takedown and a second-period reversal to give him all the cushion he needed to advance to Friday’s night session with All-America status on the line.

OSU’s Jordan Williams, Teague Travis eliminated

Needing a takedown in the second tiebreaker overtime, OSU’s Jordan Williams came up empty-handed and suffered a 3-2 loss to Quinn Kinner of Rider in a 149-pound elimination match.

Kinner had a pair of escapes to match Williams’ second-period reversal, sending the match to overtime tied at 2. After a scoreless sudden-victory period, Kinner escaped quickly to start the first tiebreaker and that ended up being the difference.

At 157, OSU’s Teague Travis was dealt a 3-1 loss, ending his tournament. Central Michigan’s Johnny Lovett trailed Travis 1-0 entering the third period, but scored with an escape before gaining two penalty points for the win.

OSU’s Doucet stays alive

A strong third-period ride kept OSU heavyweight Konner Doucet alive on Friday.

Doucet escaped in the second period, then racked up plenty of riding time in the third against Josiah Hill of Little Rock for the 2-1 decision.

OU’s Heindselman moves on

Thanks to a second-period takedown, OU heavyweight Josh Heindselman kept himself alive with a 4-2 win over Drew Pitzer of Pittsburgh in an elimination match.

He’ll be back on the mat later in this session.

OU’s Buchanan pinned by top-seeded Brooks

OU’s Stephen Buchanan found himself on his back against the nation’s best 197-pound wrestler. Aaron Brooks of Penn State pinned Buchanan at the 2:45 mark of their quarterfinal match.

That drops Buchanan into the consolation bracket, where he’ll be back on the mat later in this session.

OSU’s Dustin Plott moves to semifinals

It looked like OSU’s Dustin Plott would have his hands full with Penn State’s sixth-seeded Bernie Truax in the 184-pound quarterfinal match.

But after Plott was taken down early, he escaped and went to work on his way to yet another bonus-point victory, a 16-6 major decision to send Plott to the semifinals.

Plott finished the match with four takedowns.

He’lll be back on the mat Friday night against second-seeded Isaiah Salazar of Minnesota.

Reversal sparks win for OSU’s Teague Travis

OSU won its fourth straight match in the Friday early session with Teague Travis picking up a 5-0 decision over Northern Colorado’s Vinny Zerban.

Travis began the second period in the down position and worked his way into a reversal. He added a third-period takedown for the final score.

Travis will be in action again later in Friday’s early session.

Izzak Olejnik stays alive with late takedown

OSU 165-pounder Izzak Olejnik looked to be closing in on a pin but time ran out, so he had to settle for a 7-1 win, thanks to the takedown and back points he scored in the final seconds.

That keeps Olejnik alive in pursuit of an All-America finish, with another match set for later in Friday’s early session.

OU’s Willie McDougald comes up short

Willie McDougald saw his run in the 149-pound bracket come to an end with a 4-3 loss to Rider’s Quinn Kinner.

McDougald entered the final period trailing 4-1 and picked up a penalty point, then an escape point. But he couldn’t secure a takedown for the win. OU coaches challenged a late potential takedown, but the no-call was upheld by video review.

The Sooners now have two wrestlers remaining, with Stephen Buchanan in the 197-pound quarterfinals and heavyweight Josh Heindselman in the consolation bracket.

OSU’s Jordan Williams advances with tech fall

Jordan Williams wasted no time getting to work in his elimination match Friday. The OSU redshirt freshman scored three takedowns and a nearfall in the first period on his way to a 20-4 technical fall over Wisconsin’s Joseph Zargo.

Williams will be back in action later in this session in another elimination match.

OSU’s Daton Fix survives in overtime

Daton Fix is a five-time NCAA semifinalist and will be a five-time All-American after surviving with a 2-1 decision in tiebreaker overtime.

Iowa State’s Evan Frost was determined to prevent Fix’s offensive attacks, and it worked, with Fix unable to finish a takedown.

They went to sudden-victory overtime tied at 1 and the score remained there until the tiebreaker rideouts. Fix, starting on bottom, escaped 3 seconds into the first tiebreaker period and went to the final tiebreaker up 2-1.

Frost opted for the neutral start and took a shot, grabbing Fix’s legs. But with Fix on Frost’s back, a stalemate was called with 9 seconds left in the period.

Fix avoided Frost’s final shots and advanced to heavy boos from the Iowa State contingent.

Fix nearly finished the bout in regulation, but Frost escaped 1 second short of Fix securing a full minute of riding time.

He will face Michigan's Dylan Ragusin, the No. 5 seed, in Friday night's semifinals.

OSU’s Troy Spratley falls in sudden-victory overtime

Just like when they met at Gallagher-Iba Arena a month ago, Iowa’s Drake Ayala got a takedown in sudden-victory overtime to defeat OSU’s Troy Spratley.

The takedown was challenged by OSU coach John Smith, but review upheld the call.

Ayala, the No. 3 seed, advanced to the semifinals with a 4-1 decision. Sixth-seeded Spratley drops into the consolation, where he will be one win away from securing All-America status.
