NC’s ‘American Idol’ auditions happen this week. Details on how to try out.

From Clay Aiken and Scotty McCreery to Fantasia Barrino and Chris Daughtry — and plenty more — North Carolina has a long history of strong performers going far on the reality competition singing show “American Idol.”

Think you could be the next “Idol” star from the Tar Heel State?

Get your singing voice ready, because North Carolina “Idol” auditions are coming up this Friday, Aug. 5. This is the date for the live auditions, but there’s also an option to submit an online video audition at any time.

To help you plan your audition, we’ve compiled information about the process, including key dates, below.

Here’s what to know about auditioning for “American Idol” in North Carolina for the upcoming season.

How do you audition for ‘American Idol’?

There are two options for first-round “Idol” auditions this year: a live audition with producers on set dates, or video auditions, which are available anytime. Both options are virtual.

Live auditions — which are conducted using Zoom video conferences — take place on specific days for each of the 50 states and Washington, D.C. During the live auditions, you’ll meet with “Idol” producers in the video call and sing for them.

Online video auditions are available at anytime, regardless of which state you live in. In those auditions, you submit a video of yourself answering a few questions and then singing, and you do not meet face-to-face (or Zoom-to-Zoom) with producers.

What are the eligibility requirements to be on ‘American Idol’?

Before you get too far in the registration and audition process, you should make sure that you’re eligible to compete on the show and meet the requirements.

Some eligibility requirements for the upcoming season of “Idol” include:

You must have been born on or between June 2, 1993, and September 15, 2007.

You must be a legal U.S. resident and have either the unrestricted right to work in the United States or “possess the appropriate United States employment authorization that permits you to participate and compete” on the show and associated post-show engagements, such as a recording contract.

You must not be currently running for public office, and you must agree to not become a candidate for public office until at least one year after the season airs.

You must not have previously won any season of “Idol.” (We’re looking at you, Scotty.)

When are ‘American Idol’ auditions in NC?

Each state has its own designated day for live video auditions with producers.

North Carolina’s live audition day is Friday, Aug. 5, from 1-6 p.m.

Note: You may only register and audition once per state, but you may register to audition in multiple states. You do not need to be a resident of or physically present in the state for which you choose to register.

Also note: Registering for a live audition does not guarantee you the opportunity to audition, “Idol” guidelines say.

How to sign up for NC ‘American Idol’ auditions

If you’d like to audition in the live video format with show producers on the call, you can sign up online at fmna.etribez.com/ag/fmna/ai6abc/welcomeOnsite.html.

Once you’re on the homepage, select the state you’d like to audition under. Each state has its own designated day for auditions.

Once you click on your state, you’ll be asked to complete a series of registration questions, including entering your date of birth, full name and more. You’ll also be required to sign a personal release form. Note: If you’re under 18 years old, a parent or guardian will need to register for you.

It’s a good idea to register prior to the day of the auditions for your state, but same-day registration is available. More details will be released on the day of the audition on the “American Idol” mobile app and by the official “Idol” Twitter and Instagram accounts (@americanidol on both platforms).

If you complete all the steps to register correctly and successfully, you should receive an email confirming the date and time of your audition, as well as a link to the Zoom where you’ll meet with producers and complete your audition.

To complete the Zoom audition on your scheduled day, you’ll need a computer, phone or tablet with an internet connection capable of running the Zoom software.

All auditions will be recorded and “may be used in any manner, like promoting American Idol on the show website, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and TikTok accounts, or in the show itself,” the audition guidelines say.

Remember, registering for an audition does not guarantee that you’ll be admitted to a virtual audition.

How to submit a video audition for ‘American Idol’

If you’d rather submit a video to audition, instead of meeting with producers and auditioning over Zoom, you can begin the registration process online at fmna.etribez.com/ag/fmna/ai6abc/welcome.html.

On the online audition website, you’ll be asked to answer a series of questions in both video form and text, then you’ll be able to record yourself singing and upload the video.

You’ll also be given the option to upload a pre-existing video, either in a file format or through a YouTube link, as long as the video meets the requirements for the audition.

You can only submit one audition video for the season, though if you audition using the live option, you are also eligible to submit a separate video audition if you’d like to do so.

The deadline to submit video auditions is Oct. 15 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time.
