It’s generally believed the Boston Celtics‘ roster, as currently constructed, will never win an NBA championship. And Marcus Smart could be on the move this offseason, as a result.

According to Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated, Brad Stevens wants to trade Smart ahead of the 2021 season. Stevens has reportedly become frustrated by Smart’s “unpredictable play.” There may be some justification to Stevens’ line of thinking.

Smart is an inconsistent offensive player. He scored 13.1 points per game this last season, but shot just 39.8 percent overall and 33 percent from three-point range. In today’s NBA, those numbers don’t often cut it. Smart does make up for his inconsistent offensive play on the defensive end. He’s one of the NBA’s lone old-school, tough-nosed players. He does have value, no matter how you spin it.

Stevens reportedly wants to capitalize on such value. The Smart trade rumors are spreading like wildfire within the NBA.

It doesn’t look like Celtics fans are very enthusiastic about the idea of trading Marcus Smart. He’s become a fan-favorite because of his high-intensity play. Boston may be wise to keep him around at least one more year.

Take a look at how Celtics fans are reacting to the latest trade rumors.

It looks like there’s three potential routes the Celtics could take here.

First would be keep Marcus Smart. Second would be trade Marcus Smart and sign former star Isaiah Thomas. Third is trade Smart for Spencer Dinwiddie.

What do you think, Boston fans? Should the Celtics trade Smart ahead of the 2021 season?
