Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic is currently with the Slovenian men’s basketball team for the Olympic basketball tournament in Tokyo. But when he returns to the United States, he could have a big surprise waiting for him.

According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Mavericks are prepared to offer Doncic a five-year, $202 million contract extension after the Olympics. It would be the biggest deal in Mavs history, surpassing the $158 million contract for Kristaps Porzingis in 2019.

Doncic has certainly earned every penny that the Mavs are ready to offer him. In three short years he’s become one of the NBA’s most dominant forwards, putting up absurd numbers on a regular basis.

Fans and non-fans of the Mavericks alike are stunned at the incredible sum the team is willing to pay. But just about everyone agrees that he’s earned his money and then some:

Luka Doncic was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks after three superb seasons with Real Madrid. Atlanta decided to trade him to the Dallas Mavericks for Trae Young in a move that many still debate.

After winning Rookie of the Year honors in 2019, Doncic has made back-to-back All-Star games and earned back-to-back All-NBA honors. He’s averaged 28.3 points, 8.7 rebounds and 8.7 assists per game as the Mavs have made the playoffs in back-to-back years.

While there were some rumblings that Doncic was not getting along with the team, the Mavs clearly want to make him the cornerstone of their franchise for years to come.

Now all that remains is for Luka Doncic to sign on the dotted line and make that relationship official.

He may just have to wait until after winning a medal for Slovenia.
