The Brooklyn Nets probably aren’t going to trade Kyrie Irving, but if they ever did, the All-Star point guard would just retire.

That’s what FOX Sports 1’s Nick Wright is saying, anyway.

The basketball pundit reported on Wednesday that while there are some Irving trades that might make sense, they won’t happen. Irving’s agents have made it clear he would just retire if he got traded.

“There are a handful of Kyrie trades that potentially make sense for the Nets, Kyrie’s agents have made it known that Kyrie would simply *retire from the NBA* if Brooklyn were to trade him,” he reports.

Irving is only 29 years old. However, if any professional athlete was going to shock people with a retirement decision before turning 30, it would probably be Kyrie Irving.

Basketball fans seem to agree.

“Basketball just doesn’t seem to be Kyrie’s focus anymore. He’s really, really good at it, but where is his heart & mind? I think that is a valid question,” one fan wrote.

“The only Kyrie trades that make sense are for a defensive superstar big like Giannis, AD or Embiid or someone like Curry/Kawhi lol and none of them are on the market,” another fan added.

While some might question Irving’s commitment to basketball, it’s important to remember that he’s coming off a season in which he averaged 27 points on 50/40/90 shooting. He remains one of the truly elite offensive players in today’s game.

Irving, meanwhile, posted a cryptic message on social media today.

While many are linking Irving’s comment to the pandemic, that could be a leap.

That’s a fair point.

In all likelihood, Irving will be suiting up for the Nets on opening night later this fall. Brooklyn, armed with Irving, Kevin Durant and James Harden, might be the favorite to win it all this season.
