The Akron-Canton region may see some severe weather today, with strong to severe thunderstorms potentially bringing damaging wind gusts and large hail, the National Weather Service said.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop late this morning and continue into the afternoon — and there's a "slight risk" that they may be severe, the agency said. The thunderstorms are possible mainly near or east of Interstate 71.

"Damaging wind gusts will be the main threat," the National Weather Service said.

The high temperature is expected to be 81 degrees.

The National Weather Service issued a "special weather statement" at 10:24 a.m., saying that a strong thunderstorm was passing over North Canton and near Canton, the Stark County Sheriff's Office said. The wind gusts were reported at 50 mph with half-inch hail.
