A new national store is moving into the former Office Depot in Clovis. When will it open?

The Office Depot near Willow and Herndon avenues has been empty since the retailer closed three stores in the Fresno area last year.

Now, a new national store is moving in.

Discount clothing store Burlington has signed a lease to take over the space at 685 Herndon Ave. in the Clovis Commons shopping center, between Target and T.J.Maxx, confirmed retail broker Doug Cords of Commercial Retail Associates.

The other Burlington on Shaw Avenue near Minnewawa Avenue is expected to remain open.

Work has started on the Office Depot building, including revamping the exterior of the store. The space is scheduled to be fully turned over to the retailer in April, with the store likely opening sometime later in 2023.

Burlington — the company dropped the “Coat Factory” from its name in 2009 — now sells a lot more than outerwear. It caters to people shopping for low-priced men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, along with baby, home and beauty products.

Burlington has more than 800 stores in 45 states.

It has ramped up new store openings in recent years. It plans to open 120 stores this year (technically 90 new stores as many existing locations are moving). It also plans to open more than 100 stores a year moving forward.

Many are its new format, a smaller version of the sometimes massive stores.
