Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones released a statement on Wednesday announcing head coach Mike McCarthy would be returning to the Cowboys for the 2024 NFL season.

There was speculation about McCarthy’s job security following a 48-32 loss to the Green Bay Packers in the NFL Wild Card round. The Cowboys were favorites heading into the game and were undefeated at home in the regular season.

The loss continued the Cowboys almost 30-year streak of not appearing in an NFC Championship or Superbowl.

In his statement, Jones said he kept McCarthy because he felt it put the Cowboys in the best position to win.

“I believe this team is very close and capable of achieving our ultimate goals and the best step forward for us will be with Mike McCarthy as our head coach,” said Jones, “ Mike has the highest regular season winning percentage of any head coach in Cowboys history and we will dedicate ourselves, in partnership with him, to translating that into reaching our postseason goals. Certainly, Mike’s career has demonstrated post-season success at a high level, and we have great confidence that can continue.”

NFL pundits sounded off after the announcement with some calling it a mistake and others saying keeping McCarthy was the right decision.

Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson shared a clip of McCarthy dancing to “Many Men,(Wish Death)” by 50 Cent seemingly endorsing his head coach’s return and chiding those who wanted to replace him.
