Nashville school shooting – latest: Audrey Hale used secret gun cache in shooting captured on police bodycam

Nashville police chief John Drake says that school shooter Audrey Hale was “under doctor’s care for an emotional disorder” and had hidden seven legally purchased weapons at her family home.

Chief Drake said that three of the weapons were used in the horrific incident. He said that Hale’s parents knew she had one gun but believed she had sold it and had no other weapons.

He added that the police force “knew nothing” about the treatment but that “her parents felt she should not own weapons.”

Earlier, police released graphic bodycam footage of the moment officers shot dead Nashville mass shooting suspect Audrey Hale after six people were killed in an assault on a private Christian elementary school on Monday morning.

The Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) previously shared surveillance camera footage of Hale, 28, arriving at the Covenant School in the Green Hills suburb of the southern city in a silver Honda Fit car, parking and then proceeding towards the school before entering via a side door, blasting through glass double doors and opening fire on staff and students.

Students Evelyn Dieckhaus, Hallie Scruggs and William Kinney, all aged nine, died in the incident, as did headmistress Katherine Koonce, 60, and staff members Cynthia Peak and Mike Hill, both aged 61.

Police said that the suspect, who was armed with two assault-style rifles and a handgun, was a former student at the school who had methodically planned the attack and may have harboured “resentment” against the institution.

Tennessee lawmaker on gun violence: ‘We’re not going to fix it’

Tuesday 28 March 2023 18:46 , Graeme Massie

Tennessee congressman Tim Burchett gave a tone-deaf interview the day after three children and three adults were slain in Nashville, saying ‘We’re not going to fix’ gun violence.

The Republican, when asked what could be done to protect children from school shootings, simply said that his family homeschools their daughter.

And when asked what role Congress could play in ending gun violence in the US, replied, “I don’t see any real role that we could do other than mess things up.”

Twitter users were quick to point out that Mr Burchett does believe bans work in other areas as he was a vocal supporter of banning drag shows in Tennessee.

“Why did this man choose to serve if he can’t do anything? Stand aside for someone that can and will,” wrote one Twitter user.

And another added: “Translation; I’m funded by the NRA. I plan to do nothing…..”

Nashville shooter believed to be planning more attacks on local mall and family members

Tuesday 28 March 2023 15:00 , Joe Sommerlad

Local police chief John Drake appeared on CBS Mornings today with a fresh update about yesterday’s atrocity, telling Gayle King, Tony Dokoupil and Nate Burleson: “We strongly believe there was going to be some other targets, including maybe family members, and one of the malls here in Nashville. And that just did not happen.”

Chief Drake said a search of Audrey Hale’s home had turned up two additional weapons “and I believe some more maps pertaining to maybe some thinking about some other incidents”.

He confirmed that Hale had attended the school ”and had some history there” and added: “What detectives have said so far is there's possibly some resentment for having to go to that school.”

Chief Drake said the attack had been “targeted and planned” and explained: “We have a manifesto, we have a booklet, that shows the exactly what she had planned to do.

“We have maps that show the entry point into the school, the weapons that were going to be used, the clothing that she was gonna wear, and she had drawn it up, almost like a cartoon character. It was exactly what she had on during this incident.”

AOC slams Marjorie Taylor Greene’s transphobic comments over Nashville shooting: ‘Disgusting’

Tuesday 28 March 2023 07:30 , Maroosha Muzaffar

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez slammed fellow congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene’s latest comments blaming gender-affirming care for the school shooting in Nashville.

Metro Nashville Police officers shot and killed Audrey Hale after he killed six people, including three nine-year-old children, at Covenant Presbyterian School. Hale reportedly identified as transgender and used he/him pronouns. Law enforcement officials initially described the suspect as a woman in the aftermath of the shooting.

The shooter reportedly previously attended the school and used two assault-style rifles and a handgun in the mid-morning attack. Police reportedly found a manifesto that could offer a motive for a crime.

“There’s right now a theory that we may be able to talk about later but it’s not confirmed, and so we’ll put that out as soon as we can,” Police Chief John Drake said.

Ms Greene almost immediately pointed to the shooter’s supposed gender identity in a series of tweets.

“I am away in the mountains trying to get peace and take a mental health break. Sadly, gun violence does not take time off. The latest school shooting will leave more victims and broken families,” he tweeted on Monday.

“We cannot harden our way out of this. Tennessee, like Florida, is a state working overtime to weaken gun laws. The facts are that we can either use legislation to make these shootings more predictable as is happening in Tennesse and Fl, or we can use legislation to save lives. DO NOT LET THIS CONTINUE. PUSH THOSE WE ELECT TO SAVE LIVES.”

The shooter who killed three children and three adults at The Covenant School, had maps of the facility and a manifesto, said Metro Nashville Police Department Chief John Drake.

Chief Drake told reporters on Monday afternoon that the school was the only place targetted by the 28-year-old female gunman.

“We have a manifesto, we have some writings that we’re going over that pertain to this date,” said Chief Drake at a press conference. “We have a map drawn out of how this was all gonna take place.”

He added that the gunman gained entry into the school by shooting through a locked door.

“We’ve also determined that there were maps drawn of the school in detail, of surveillance, entry points, et cetera. We know and believe entry was gained through shooting through one of the doors, is how they actually got into the school,” he said.
