Cody Ware, a NASCAR Cup Series driver with Rick Ware Racing, was arrested Monday and charged with felony assault by strangulation and misdemeanor assault on a female. He has been suspended indefinitely from NASCAR competition, the race organization announced Monday.

The Iredell County Sheriff's Office Detention Facility confirmed the arrest and charges to Road & Track Monday afternoon. As of the time of that call, Ware is being held on those charges and has a bond set at $3000.

NASCAR announced an indefinite suspension for Ware on Monday, which follows how the series has generally dealt with concerns of off-track violence. Rick Ware Racing did not immediately respond to R&T's request for comment on the arrest or their plans for the No. 51 car following the suspension.

Rick Ware Racing announced on Saturday that Ware would miss the weekend's race at Bristol "to focus on a personal matter," instead calling NASCAR Truck Series driver Matt Crafton up for the remainder of the weekend. Ware had made 7 starts this season for his father's team. In addition to 97 career Cup Series starts, Ware has also run three IndyCar races in a partnership between Rick Ware Racing and Dale Coyne Racing. Each of his IndyCar starts came in 2021. Ware's brother, Carson, was suspended by NASCAR following charges of misdemeanor assault first reported in October 2021.
