St. Augustine’s Municipal Marina will welcome the Nao Trinidad (Trinidad), a full-size replica of the tall ship Magellan-Elcan - the first ship to circumnavigate the globe between 1519 and 1522, proving that the world was round.

Commandeered by Ferdinand Magellan, the 16th-century journey has been described by many historians as the greatest maritime feat in history as it opened new routes and connected continents. The journey crossed the Atlantic Ocean, sailed along the coast of South America, discovered the Strait of Magellan and crossed the Pacific Ocean for the first time in history.

Weighing in at almost 200 tons, the replica measures 95-feet in length and 26-feet in width. The vessel sports four masts, five sails and five decks that were built with iroko and pine wood.

It reportedly took 14 years to build and was completed in March of 2018.

Previously outfitted as a replica of the Santa Maria – a ship sailed by Christopher Columbus – the Trinidad was renamed to include Magellan’s voyage.

Today, the floating Spanish maritime museum visits ports throughout the world.

The Trinidad's arrival will celebrate the kinship between America’s oldest city and Avilés, Spain.
