A vehicle belonging to a missing 65-year-old man turned up empty in a Northern California river, sheriff’s officials reported.

Terry McInnes of Piercy in Mendocino County was last seen March 24, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office said in an April 22 news release. Someone reported him missing April 12.

On April 17, his unoccupied vehicle was found in the East Branch of the South Fork of the Eel River, near the Mendocino County line, officials said.

A search including a California Highway Patrol helicopter failed to find any sign of McInnes, the sheriff’s office said.

Authorities believe he may have tried to drive across the river on a private road at a point where the water is normally lower, officials said. His vehicle may have been swept downstream by the higher-than-normal flow in late March.

The search for McInnes continues, sheriff’s officials said.

They ask anyone with information to call the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office at 707-463-4411 or the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office at 707-445-7251.

Humboldt County is about a 295-mile drive northwest from San Francisco.
