Mystery ‘explosions’ keep rocking Arkansas community. Where are they coming from?

The booms keep coming, heard and felt for miles around Blytheville, rattling windows and raising concerns, but nobody seems to know what’s causing them.

“The City of Blytheville and the Blytheville Police Department are aware of the recent bouts of ‘explosions,’” police said in a Facebook post. “We have received several calls about these occurrences, and find these events to be alarming and concerning.”

Residents of Blytheville, a town of more than 13,000 in the northeast corner of Arkansas, have some ideas of their own, maybe earthquakes, possibly undisclosed military activity, a potential Russian invasion, or “someone’s meth lab recipe went wrong,” comments read.

The apparent explosions are so powerful they’re shaking homes, including those in neighboring communities, people living in the area say.

“Glad someone (is) taking it seriously enough to let us know,” one person commented on the post.

“I find it sad that so many are making jokes about this,” wrote another. “Many are negatively affected by the noise from this.”

Another popular suggestion is that the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission is blowing up beaver dams using explosives. However, a spokesman with the agency said it doesn’t have anyone blowing up dams this time of year.

It could also be someone using tannerite for target practice, some suggest. Tannerite is a mixture of aluminum powder and ammonium nitrate, explodes impressively when shot, and is fairly popular among shooters with access to enough land to safely use it.

“Though we don’t know the exact cause or source of these events, please note, these ‘explosions’ are not occurring within the city limits of Blytheville,” police said in the post.

Police are asking that anyone with information about the cause of the explosions to contact the Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office at 870-658-2242.

McClatchy also reached out to the sheriff’s office for comment.
