Muncie man held on suspicion of attempted murder after machete, knife attack

MUNCIE, Ind. — A Muncie resident was being held on suspicion of attempted murder after attacking another man with a machete and knife.

According to Muncie police, Christopher Maurice Williams, 41, attacked a 56-year-old man at a "gathering" at Enbright Street and Kirby Avenue on Monday evening.

The victim said Williams — who he knew only as "Chris" — approached him from behind, then said he intended to "kill him," according to police. Williams then swung an 18-inch machete at the back of his head, police said.

"The blade of the machete grazed the back of (the victim's) head behind his left ear," an officer wrote in an affidavit.

The man said a struggle ensued, and he managed to get control of the machete, which was given to members of Williams' family.

He said Williams then pulled a knife and began waving it at the victim's face. The man said he raised his right hand in front of his face, and Williams stabbed him in the hand, near the base of his right thumb.

Others present then separated the two men. Police learned of the incident shortly after 10 p.m. Monday when the victim was brought to the emergency department of IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital.

Officers later arrested Williams, who is described as homeless, in the 1900 block of South Madison Street. They recovered the machete, two folding knives and one fixed-blade knife.

In addition to attempted murder, Williams was also suspected of battery with a deadly weapon resulting in serious bodily injury and intimidation with a deadly weapon.

The Delaware County prosecutor's office will determine what formal charges will be filed in the case.

He was being held in the Delaware County Jail on Tuesday under a $60,000 cash bond.

At the time of his latest arrest, Williams already faced a residential entry charge filed in February in Delaware Circuit Court 1. His trial in that case is set for Aug. 6.

According to court records, Williams had been convicted of crimes including battery, forgery, intimidation and resisting law enforcement.
