4 dead, including gunman, in shooting at Indianapolis mall

Four people are dead, including a gunman, and two injured after a shooter entered the food court of Greenwood Park Mall outside Indianapolis with a long gun on Sunday and began firing.

“It appears that he had a rifle with several magazines of ammunition, entered the food court and began shooting,” Greenwood Police Chief Jim Ison told the Indianapolis Star.

The gunman was taken down by an armed bystander who “observed the shooting in progress and shot the shooter,” Ison said.

The mall was evacuated as police investigated the incident, which was reported at about 6 p.m. on Sunday at the mall in Greenwood, a 60,000-population suburb south of Indianapolis. It’s got more than 130 indoor and outdoor restaurants and stores, including anchors JCPenney’s, Macy’s and Von Maur and is one of nine Simon Property Group malls in Indiana.

“We are sickened by yet another type of incident like this in our country,” Indianapolis Assistant Chief of Police Chris Bailey said, according to The Associated Press.

“We experienced a mass shooting this evening at the Greenwood Park Mall,” the town’s mayor, Mark Myers, said in a statement.

He added that the Greenwood Police Department had the scene under control and that there was no further danger to the public.

“This tragedy hits at the core of our community,” Myers said. “Please offer your prayers to the victims and our first responders.”
