MSU hockey starts 2nd half of Big Ten schedule with 5-0 rout of Penn State

The Michigan State hockey team had its full team back together Friday night for the first time since early December.

And the No. 8 Spartans were on top of their game.

Michigan State's Joey Larson, shown scoring a goal against Notre Dame during a game last month, scored two goals in the Spartans' 5-0 win over Penn State on Friday night.

Joey Larson scored two goals and Trey Augustine stopped 30 shots for his second career shutout as MSU blanked No. 20 Penn State, 5-0, in the first game of a weekend series at Pegula Ice Arena in State College, Pennsylvania.

Tanner Kelly, Reed Lebster and Gavin O'Connell scored the other goals for the Spartans.

MSU had four key players — Augustine, forward Isaac Howard, forward Tommi Mannisto and defenseman Maxim Strbak — back in the lineup for the first time since its series sweep of Notre Dame Dec. 8-9. Those four had been away at the World Junior Championships in Sweden.

The Spartans (14-4-3 overall, 8-1-2 Big Ten) are in second place in the Big Ten with 27 points, just three points behind No. 3 Wisconsin, who has played one extra league game.

MSU and Penn State will play again at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in a game that will be on the Big Ten Network.
