The original Mother’s Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 and became an official holiday in the U.S. in 1914. The holiday was proclaimed by President Woodrow Wilson in 1914.

But the idea of celebrating mother's existed before 1914. The early Christian festival known as “Mothering Sunday” was long a time for celebrating mother figures.

The Mothering Sunday celebration was on the fourth Sunday during Lent and was viewed as a time when churchgoers would return to their “mother church,” - that is, the one closest to home - for a special service. This service eventually involved into one where kids would give their moms flowers. This custom eventually "merged" with the Mother's Day holiday in the 1940s.

Mother's Day has evolved into becoming one of the biggest holidays for consumer spending.
