Motherland star Anna Maxwell Martin addresses spinoff return

Motherland star Anna Maxwell Martin has addressed the possibility of appearing in the show's new spin-off.

Last week it was announced that a new series focusing on Amanda (Lucy Punch) was in the works, aptly titled Amandaland, which will see the character forced to downsize after divorcing Johnny.

Martin – who plays perpetually stressed mother Julia in the main show – was asked on last night's (May 23) The One Show about the possibility of her character popping up in the spin-off, the star admitting that it's unlikely.

"No, I don’t think Julia or Kevin or Liz are popping in," she said. "But I'll be really happy to see those two, because I really love them and I think they are so brilliant as well.

Praising stars Punch and Philippa Dunne, who will return as Anne in the spin-off, Martin added: "Phil and Luce are brilliant comediennes and brilliant actresses, so yeah it's good."

Amandaland will see the titular character relocate to South Harlesden, as she tries to "get her head around raising teenagers, dealing with modern motherhood horrors like teenage drinking, fake Instagram accounts and eco anxiety."

Mother Felicity (Joanna Lumley) will also return for the show, being "completely in denial that she is, in fact, lonely", while they navigate their "slightly unhealthy co-dependent relationship based on backhanded compliments and veiled snipes about her new home".

Anne is also "sucked back into being Amanda's minion to help her navigate the social scene with the other parents at the children's new school".

"Motherland continues to be one of the most loved comedies on the BBC, and we're so pleased we are carrying on with the story, taking the characters in a new direction and to a different postcode," the BBC's head of comedy Tanya Qureshi said.

"Lucy, Joanna and Phillipa are three of the funniest comedy actors around and we're thrilled to have them on board".

Amandaland will air on BBC One at a later date, while all three series of Motherland are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
