Mother of Samuel Olson suspects father played role in brutal slaying his ex-girlfriend has already been arrested for

In her first public comments since the body of her 5-year-old son, Samuel Olson, was found in a Texas motel room, his grieving mother pointed a finger at the boy’s father, whose ex-girlfriend has already been arrested in connection with the case.

When asked by a group of reporters whether she suspected her ex, Dalton Olson was involved, Sarah Olson responded, “I don’t see how he couldn’t, with all the evidence that has now been brought to light, how are you not involved?”

The grieving mother added at a press conference on Tuesday that the last time she saw her son was at his birthday party in May 2020, just more than a year before his remains were discovered stuffed in a plastic container inside a motel in Jasper. Her lawyer said she’d been waiting to speak out on the matter until the body was officially identified as Samuel, which happened on June 9.

Sarah and Dalton Olson have long been engaged in a custody battle over the boy, which was slowed by the coronavirus pandemic.

Samuel was first reported missing by Theresa Balboa, who initially claimed he was picked up by Sarah and a man pretending to be a police officer. Balboa, who was dating Samuel’s father when the boy disappeared, is currently accused of placing the child’s body inside a small box and then leaving it in a storage unit in the city of Webster before taking it to the motel, where it would be discovered.

She is facing a count of tampering with evidence, and prosecutors have already expressed intentions to file additional charges in connection with the case.

While Samuel had not attended school late April, investigators suspect Balboa had been watching the boy until around mid-May. On May 10 however, she called her roommate, an unidentified male, and told him that the child was dead.

In an interview with authorities, the man said he returned home after the call and discovered Samuel bruised and unresponsive on the bed. From there, they moved the body into the bathtub, where it remained for two days.

Eventually, the pair dropped a container holding the body off at a storage unit, though Balboa later returned on May 31 with a different friend to pick up the foul-smelling box. They then drove to a motel in Jasper, about 115 miles northeast of Houston, where police would find Samuel’s body in a box the next day.

Officers also discovered 29-year-old Balboa inside the motel, hiding in the bathroom.

Dalton Olson, has not been charged but continues to face questioning in the case.
