A 40-year-old woman was arrested after her 10-year-old son called 911 to report that he had been shot on Wednesday.

Wichita police were dispatched shortly before midnight to the intersection of Hydraulic and Industrial Avenue, where a Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office deputy had made a traffic stop on a car, police spokesperson Andrew Ford said.

“Within a minute of the call, a Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Deputy conducted a traffic stop of a gold Chevy Impala driven by Alvina Horner, a 40-year-old female heading north on I-135 and K-15 with a 10-year-old juvenile male later identified as her son in the front passenger seat suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper left leg,” Ford said.

The deputy called for additional help. Wichita officers and Sedgwick County EMS arrived and the boy was taken to a hospital, Ford said.

The boy’s injuries were not life threatening.

Officers searched the Impala and found a loaded firearm under the driver’s seat where Horner was sitting. She was taken in for questioning and detectives from the Exploited and Missing Child Unit went to the hospital to interview the boy, Ford said.

Horner was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail shortly before 5:30 a.m. Thursday on suspicion of aggravated battery and aggravated endangering of a child, jail records show.
