When you think “sleeper sofa” do you picture a stiff, boxy and uncomfortable couch? Same—or at least I used to. It turns out there have been some major advances in the world of sleeper sofas over the last few years (who knew?), and many of the newer designs are comfortable and—dare I say?—chic. And suddenly turning our living room into a temporary guest room when the in-laws show up unannounced again doesn’t seem like such a horrible idea.

That said, if you’re anything like me, finding the right couch-turned-bed involves parsing through some furniture jargon. What’s the difference between a sleeper sofa and a sofa bed, anyway? The short answer is that a sleeper sofa has a mattress and frame hidden underneath while a sofa bed doesn’t include a mattress. So below, I not only vetted the absolute most comfortable sofa beds and sleepers on the market, but I also included an in-depth guide of what makes them different—plus how to choose the right one—at the bottom of this article.

How I Chose the Most Comfortable Sleeper Sofas

After scouring hundreds of ‘sleeper sofa’ TikToks, plus customer reviews from big brands like Crate and Barrel and West Elm, I narrowed things down by looking for specific keywords like ‘comfortable’ and ‘firm yet supportive’ within the descriptions. I also chatted with a clinical physiotherapist to find out what to look for in a comfortable sleeper sofa that won’t destory your back. Then, I made sure each sofa bed and sleeper met the following criteria: a) that it was indeed a sleeper sofa with a mattress or a pull-out sofa bed (not a futon), b) that the cushions were soft yet supportive with foam-, fiber- or down-filling and c) that each mattress had a thickness of at least 3.5 inches.

1. West Elm Marin Sleeper Sofa

west elm

With numerous rave reviews on TikTok, it makes sense why this West Elm sleeper is a bestseller. First and foremost, the seat and back cushions are filled with foam and down—and the brand rates it as a medium 3 on a scale from 1 to 5 (5 being firmest). That means that, as a sofa, the cushions are soft enough to let you sink while still being firm enough to provide support without sagging (or requiring constant fluffing). Take it from one West Elm reviewer, who writes: “In my humble opinion, the Marin sofa is one of West Elm's most comfortable couches. Its two wide back cushions and long bench seat are slightly plush but not overstuffed. They sank in as I sat, and those side pillows don't hurt, either.”

As for the included mattress, it features a two-layer construction of high-density foam and gel-infused memory foam. Translation: It’s not only designed to contour to the body and provide support for all sleeping positions, but it’s also fit with a breathable knit cover that helps wick away body heat. Plus, according to one TikToker, her guests “freak out over how comfortable it is” after pairing the mattress with a feather-down topper from Amazon. The best part? There are more than 182 (!!) upholstery options to choose from, including performance fabric options that are durable enough to withstand spills from kids and muddy paws from pets.

2. Burrow Shift Sleeper Sofa

burrow

What makes this new Burrow introduction stand out from the heard, you ask? It was specifically designed to mimic the feel of a plush hybrid mattress with the footprint of an apartment-friendly sofa. While a typical pull-out features a folded mattress that’s tucked under a metal frame, this one has a seat that’s composed of two mattresses stacked on top of each other—and they’re arguably more comfortable than any innerspring mattress you’ll find in a traditional sleeper. The brand integrated layers of cooling memory foam, therapeutic comfort foam and supportive core foam from its Lyric Hybrid Mattress (which the brand tested with dozens of different sleepers, including the CEO of the company). You simply remove all sofa cushions, then unfold the top half of the first mattress—which is easy enough to do on your own—to reveal a queen-sized sleep surface. Basically, it eliminates the sharp metal bar of a pull-out couch while still maintaining the integrity of an all-in-one design. The added bonus, aside from its compact 84-inch width, is that the arm cushion inserts double as down alternative pillows; you can slip them into standard pillowcases when you have guests over.

“I say confidently that this Burrow sofa is the comfiest sleeper sofa I’ve ever slept—and sat and napped—on… Since it’s technically two mattresses shoved together, I was worried I would feel the gap between the two, but Burrow already thought of this issue. It has a sewed-in, thick layer of fabric that keeps the two mattresses together and makes it so that, with a fitted sheet, you barely notice the gap at all. You can really sleep right across it with no problems,” one Burrow reviewer shares. “And of course, the fabric itself is typical Burrow—we’ve already spilled red wine on it and with a simple stain remover it lifted up quickly. Even my cat’s incessant scratching hasn’t left a mark.”

3. Crate & Barrel Bedford Sleeper Sofa

Crate & Barrel

While there are (more than a few) iterations of this TikTok beloved sofa bed, Crate & Barrel’s take on the viral pop-up design steals the show. This is partly because the Bedford collection is completely customizable with seven configuration options, spanning from a full- or queen-sized loveseat to a two-piece sectional with a storage chaise. But the real selling point is that each layout has an easy slide-out configuration, disguised as a tailored front rail when it’s upright. You can pull out the rail for extra leg room or lift it to create a full-height bed—all it takes is pulling the extension until it pops into place next to the bench seat. Plus, while the seat cushions are constructed with high-density polyurethane foam and the back cushions are filled with fiber, both are encased in Dacron wrap (which is a fiber batting that provides a softer, more rounded feel for upholstered foam inserts).

The brand also designed the Bedford exclusively in collaboration with American Leather—and it has 199 fabrics to choose from, including leathers, chenilles, velvets, linens, twills and stain-resistant microfibers. One Crate and Barrel reviewer raves: “This couch’s pullout feature is so impressive for a sectional—and it can comfortably (yes, very comfortably) sleep two adults. Even without the pullout feature, the couch is extremely comfortable, and soft, on its own. Fabric is also very stain resistant.”

4. VanAcc Sleeper Sofa

Amazon

Looking for another TikTok-approved option on a budget? This sleeper has amassed more than 455K likes in a viral video for its plushy feel with storage, plus the fact that it clocks in at just under $400. In terms of comfort, it has high-elasticity sponge cushions that are designed to support you at the shoulders, hips and lower back—all while helping to release spinal compression. But what also sets it apart is the choice of L-shape or U-shaped configurations with a storage-friendly design. It includes everything from a lift-top storage bench and side pockets that can hold remotes and extra bedding for when guests sleep over. And reviewers can’t seem to get enough of the white and grey bouclé finishes (also available in linen) that feel cozy and cushy while still being minimalist enough to nail this year’s quiet luxury trend.

“First off, the comfort is WOW,” one Amazon reviewer says. “I slept on the couch for the first few nights after delivery it’s been amazing—plush, comfortable and so soft. All I want to do is lounge on it all day.” They also add, “It was also so easy and straightforward to put together; took about 2.5 hours. I love the pockets on the side of the armrests, and the two chaises have a bunch of storage room that comes in handy if you’re living in a smaller space.”

5. Poly & Bark Napa Pull-Out Sleeper

Poly & Bark

We get it; you want a sleeper sofa for convenience, but your heart dreams of a sexy, buttery leather couch. The best of both worlds does exist—and it can be delivered via Amazon. This Poly & Bark stunner features Italian leather in five colorways with a feather-down top layer that makes it feel as soft on the inside as it does smooth on the outside. The five-inch thick, tri-layered mattress also sleeps like a dream with a cushioning fiberfill top layer, memory foam in the middle and a dense polyurethane foam layer at the base. And as if the high-quality fill materials weren’t enough, the leather will naturally scuff and develop into a beautiful vintage patina—each hide is unique, so you know you’re getting a piece that’s one-of-a-kind.

“I am so in love with this sofa that it has become a running joke among my friends,” one Poly & Bark reviewer says. “Very comfortable cushioning that sits nicely—the feather/down topper is perfectly soft without swallowing you up. I love the cognac color of the natural leather and the craftsmanship is top-notch; I expect this sofa will last a long time with good care. The sleeper unfolds easily and got great reviews from my visitors (they were surprised that it was so comfy).”

6. Luann Twin Sleeper Sofa

RAYMOUR AND FLANIGAN

Worried about where your sister will sleep when she stays over in your tiny apartment? This compact number is for you. It has a twin-sized build that pulls out to reveal an innerspring/memory foam hybrid mattress and the 51-inch width ensures it’ll fit in a cozy corner when the mattress is stored. The 1.8-inch thick foam cushions also make it feel plush—and they’re fit with removable, reversible and re-fillable covers to prevent sagging. To that end, if durability is top-of-mind, it comes in 11 vintage-inspired upholstery options that are engineered with stain- and spill-resistant polyester. Not to mention that the kiln-dried hardwood frame is meant to last (aka no snapping or cracking when you bring it with you to your next rental).

“I live in a studio apartment, so I’m always looking for space savers. This sofa is a perfect size. It can fit two people (depending on how big you are) but it’s not as big as a common loveseat…I've been sitting on it while I read and it's so comfortable,” writes one Raymour and Flanigan reviewer. Plus, another person notes: “Wow, was I surprised with how comfortable the bed was. Sitting on the chair was nice, but the surprise came from the mattress!”

7. Apt2B Melrose Sectional Sleeper

APT2B

A whopping 147 inches wide and with plenty of room to sprawl on each side, this is about as big as you can go when it comes to a sectional sofa bed. Not only does it boast a sleek, contemporary design with wide track arms and a low-rise profile, but it’s also packed with high-density foam cushions that offer a cozy yet supportive sit. Plus, unlike other sectionals on this list, this one is a true sleeper sofa with a full-size, deluxe 5.5-inch thick innerspring mattress included (also available in a 4.5-inch memory foam option). On top of that, it has reversible, flippable and detached cushions that are designed for easy cleaning with removable covers. And if you’re worried about grease stains from popcorn or wine spills during movie night, it has 54 fabric options that were engineered to be kid- and pet-friendly.

Take it from one Apt2B customer’s rave review: “Even though the mattress is smaller than we would have liked, we can actually sleep all three of our grandkids on this, since the actual couch portions are parallel to the mattress…it’s almost like we have two additional twin sleepers on either side!” Plus, another person adds: “The sectional can comfortably fit six adults while sitting—four if we’re laying down with our legs stretched—and the peacock velvet fabric is incredibly soft and comfortable (plus very easy to vacuum and clean, thanks to the removable cushions). The cushions are also pleasantly firm, so they offer plenty of support, but also a comfortable amount of bounce. They hold their shape relatively well…if you want a more crisp look, this is your couch!”

8. Interior Define Sloan Sleeper Sofa

INTERIOR DEFINE

While we were originally drawn to this guy’s contemporary silhouette and organic wooden legs, we stayed for the numerous customizations you can make. First, it’s available in more than 130 fabrics with basically every color under the sun—and you can choose between three wooden leg finishes (oiled walnut, painted black or natural oak). After that, there’s the option of two cushions or one long bench seat—the latter is best for anyone who’s always losing the remote in the cracks. The most impressive customization, however, is the three cushion fills: standard down blend, double down blend and down alternative. While the standard down is non-reversible with a firmer sit, the double-down blend is engineered to be reversible and ultra-plush (though the brand warns that it requires frequent fluffing). The down alternative falls somewhere in the middle and features a reversible cushion with a soft, supportive sit—minimal fluffing required.

Naturally, the queen sleeper mattress is also customizable with the choice of a standard or memory foam construction. While the standard option is a no-frills innerspring mattress, the memory foam is engineered with more than 2 inches of high-density foam topped with another 2+ inches of memory foam. “The first night we got this, we staged a family ‘sleepover’ and watched a movie on the very comfortable pullout bed. We also really loved that we were able to design our couch, choosing a fabric that matched our color scheme, and opting for the bench sheet so nobody would ever have to sit in the crack…also nice to pick a leg color that went best with our coffee table. In the end, the product was worth the wait,” one Interior Define reviewer reports. (Just note: Delivery windows span from 10 to 14 weeks, since it’s made to order.)

9. Article Nordby Reversible Sleeper Sectional

ARTICLE

Here, another sectional with sleep, storage and organization built into its design. Not only does it have a 60-inch storage compartment on the chaise, but the L is also reversible so you can fix it to the left or the right side (aka customizable to irregular floorplans). The convertible sleeping feature is equally as innovative, where it has a high-density foam bed with supportive polyester fiber that pops up with a simple tug of the handle. What’s more, it’s made with a stain-resistant fabric that can handle pets, kids or the occasional wine spill. This is thanks to its 100 percent polyester, which has a heavy-duty Martindale score of 50,000 (over 40,000 is usually designated as commercial grade).

One Article reviewer writes, “I’ve now spent more than a few days sitting on this sofa while I’m WFH or watching TV, and the Nordby sofa is the most well-made sleeper sofa I’ve sat on. It feels sturdy and firm; you definitely don’t feel the sleeping mechanism below you… While those who prefer a more cloudlike sofa experience may find the cushions too hard (easily fixable with a mattress topper), I found them to be extremely well-made and supportive. They also don’t seem like they will sink in over the long run—they’re made to last and to stand up to daily use, not just intermittent guest room usage.”

10. Lulu & Georgia Lotte Sleeper Sofa

LULU AND GEORGIA

With a beautiful selection of earth-toned fabrics and gentle curves in a shelter-style design, you’d never know this couch is actually a sofa bed, let alone that it’s hiding a queen-size memory foam mattress under its cushions. While the down- and feather-blended cushions offer a cloud-like feel, the queen-sized cloud contour mattress features two layers of recovering memory foam that slowly springs back into shape (and it’s hypoallergenic for anyone with sensitive skin). It also has an extra-deep bench seat that truly lets you sink in—and the upholstery offers more than just good looks with performance fabric options that prevent stains from seeping in.

“The cushions are super plush and comfortable without being too soft to get out of. The [camel velvet] fabric is a great neutral but has a tint of blush undertone which makes it feel super chic! I think my favorite part about this sofa, though, is that it has one giant back cushion and a single seat cushion so nobody gets stuck sitting in the cracks between cushions,” one Lulu and Georgia reviewer writes.

What's the Difference Between a Sleeper Sofa and a Sofa Bed?

The simple difference between a sleeper sofa and a sofa bed is that the former has a mattress and frame hidden underneath. Sofa beds, on the other hand, don’t include a mattress. Instead, they often have a hidden layer of foam that you can pull and lift to meet the bench seat for an extended sleeping surface. Plus, unlike futons (which are usually convertible by laying the backrest down), sofa beds tend to be larger with a queen-sized width when fully extended.
