It turns out there have been some major advances in the world of sleeper sofas over the last few years (who knew?), and many of the newer designs are comfortable and—dare I say?—chic. And suddenly turning our living room into a temporary guest room when the in-laws show up unannounced again doesn’t seem like such a horrible idea.
That said, if you’re anything like me, finding the right couch-turned-bed involves parsing through some furniture jargon. What’s the difference between a sleeper sofa and a sofa bed, anyway? The short answer is that a sleeper sofa has a mattress and frame hidden underneath while a sofa bed doesn’t include a mattress. So below, I not only vetted the absolute most comfortable sofa beds and sleepers on the market, but I also included an in-depth guide of what makes them different—plus how to choose the right one—at the bottom of this article.

After scouring hundreds of ‘sleeper sofa’ TikToks, plus customer reviews from big brands like Crate and Barrel and West Elm, I narrowed things down by looking for specific keywords like ‘comfortable’ and ‘firm yet supportive’ within the descriptions. I also chatted with a clinical physiotherapist to find out what to look for in a comfortable sleeper sofa that won’t destory your back. Then, I made sure each sofa bed and sleeper met the following criteria: a) that it was indeed a sleeper sofa with a mattress or a pull-out sofa bed (not a futon), b) that the cushions were soft yet supportive with foam-, fiber- or down-filling and c) that each mattress had a thickness of at least 3.5 inches.

First and foremost, the seat and back cushions are filled with foam and down—and the brand rates it as a medium 3 on a scale from 1 to 5 (5 being firmest). That means that, as a sofa, the cushions are soft enough to let you sink while still being firm enough to provide support without sagging (or requiring constant fluffing). Take it from one West Elm reviewer, who writes: “In my humble opinion, the Marin sofa is one of West Elm's most comfortable couches. Its two wide back cushions and long bench seat are slightly plush but not overstuffed. They sank in as I sat, and those side pillows don't hurt, either.”
As for the included mattress, it features a two-layer construction of high-density foam and gel-infused memory foam. What makes this new Burrow introduction stand out from the heard, you ask? It was specifically designed to mimic the feel of a plush hybrid mattress with the footprint of an apartment-friendly sofa. While a typical pull-out features a folded mattress that’s tucked under a metal frame, this one has a seat that’s composed of two mattresses stacked on top of each other—and they’re arguably more comfortable than any innerspring mattress you’ll find in a traditional sleeper. The brand integrated layers of cooling memory foam, therapeutic comfort foam and supportive core foam from its Lyric Hybrid Mattress (which the brand tested with dozens of different sleepers, including the CEO of the company). You simply remove all sofa cushions, then unfold the top half of the first mattress—which is easy enough to do on your own—to reveal a queen-sized sleep surface. Basically, it eliminates the sharp metal bar of a pull-out couch while still maintaining the integrity of an all-in-one design. The added bonus, aside from its compact 84-inch width, is that the arm cushion inserts double as down alternative pillows; you can slip them into standard pillowcases when you have guests over.

Plus, while the seat cushions are constructed with high-density polyurethane foam and the back cushions are filled with fiber, both are encased in Dacron wrap (which is a fiber batting that provides a softer, more rounded feel for upholstered foam inserts).
The brand also designed the Bedford exclusively in collaboration with American Leather—and it has 199 fabrics to choose from, including leathers, chenilles, velvets, linens, twills and stain-resistant microfibers. But what also sets it apart is the choice of L-shape or U-shaped configurations with a storage-friendly design. It includes everything from a lift-top storage bench and side pockets that can hold remotes and extra bedding for when guests sleep over. And reviewers can’t seem to get enough of the white and grey bouclé finishes (also available in linen) that feel cozy and cushy while still being minimalist enough to nail this year’s quiet luxury trend.
“First off, the comfort is WOW,” one Amazon reviewer says. “I slept on the couch for the first few nights after delivery it’s been amazing—plush, comfortable and so soft. All I want to do is lounge on it all day.” They also add, “It was also so easy and straightforward to put together; took about 2.5 hours. After that, there’s the option of two cushions or one long bench seat—the latter is best for anyone who’s always losing the remote in the cracks. The most impressive customization, however, is the three cushion fills: standard down blend, double down blend and down alternative. While the standard down is non-reversible with a firmer sit, the double-down blend is engineered to be reversible and ultra-plush (though the brand warns that it requires frequent fluffing). The down alternative falls somewhere in the middle and features a reversible cushion with a soft, supportive sit—minimal fluffing required.
Naturally, the queen sleeper mattress is also customizable with the choice of a standard or memory foam construction.
