More Troubling Details Emerge From Deshaun Watson Situation
The Deshaun Watson situation in Houston seems to keep going from bad to worse.
The Texans’ star quarterback reportedly wants out of the AFC South franchise. Watson, arguably a top five quarterback in the NFL, is rumored to be extremely frustrated and annoyed by the team’s head coach and general manager search.
Houston fired head coach/general manager Bill O’Brien earlier in the season. The Texans reportedly told Watson that he would be part of the franchise’s search for new leadership. However, Watson has reportedly been left out of most discussions.
Watson reportedly had two notable head coaching interview requests, but Houston ignored both of them, only to attempt to try to follow through later on.
Pro Football Talk had the latest troubling details:
Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Watson recommended not only Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy for a head-coaching interview but also former 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh. The Texans during the first week after the regular season ended made a request to interview neither.
The Texans eventually requested permission to interview Bieniemy during this past week. However, because the interview didn’t happen during the Kansas City bye week, the Texans must now wait until the Chiefs’ season ends before talking to Bieniemy.
The Texans did not request permission to interview Saleh at any time. Saleh, who was interviewed by every team with a vacancy except the Texans, recently became the new head coach of the Jets.
That is just not good.
The Texans don’t need to hire someone just to please Watson, but they should probably follow through on their promise to keep him involved in the search. And, right now, it doesn’t sound like that’s happening.
At this point, it would be surprising to see Watson still in Houston when the 2021 NFL regular season begins in September.
