The MLB trade deadline is just a few days away, which doesn’t leave much time for competitive teams to make final acquisitions before an important last few months of regular season play.

Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer is arguably the biggest name on the open market – at least for pitchers. The 37-year-old pitcher will become a free agent after this season ends.

The Nationals are hoping to cash in before that happens. According to the latest report from MLB insider Ken Rosenthal, the team is hoping to make a deal within the next two days.

“Teams pursuing Scherzer believe Nats want to act within next 48 hours to create time to work through his no-trade,” Rosenthal reported. “Chances of Scherzer making his start Thursday seem remote. Scratched from last start due to right triceps discomfit. Teams might ask: How do we know he is healthy?”

Scherzer is a three-time Cy Young winner. While he isn’t as dominant as he once was, he could be exactly what a competitive team needs to make a run at the World Series.

According to a report from earlier this afternoon, the veteran right-hander “strongly prefers the West Coast.” That could mean teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres make a run at Scherzer.

Will he be traded?
