'Moonshiners' Star Jim Tom Hedrick Dead at 82

Jim Tom Hedrick has died. He was 82.

Born Marvin "Jim Tom" Hedrick on Christmas Day in 1940, the reality TV star passed away the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 6, in Robbinsville, North Carolina, according to a statement from a family member.

Hedrick's relative didn't offer details about the circumstances surrounding his death, but they told TMZ that Hedrick had kidney cancer and had been receiving dialysis treatments for some time.

The still maker rose to fame in 2012 after starring in the second season of Discovery Channel's hit television show Moonshiners. He would go on to continue filming with the reality series for five years.

Sugarlands Distilling Co. remembered him as a "legend," mourning his death in a touching tribute shared on Facebook.

"Jim Tom dedicated much of his life to the art of moonshining, becoming a legend in Appalachia along the way," the statement read. "Jim Tom’s well-earned reputation as one of the most skilled moonshiners in the South earned him a role on the hit television program Moonshiners, where his colorful personality endeared Jim Tom to the hearts of millions."

Sugarlands president and founder Ned Vickers also paid tribute to Hedrick's legacy, writing, "Jim Tom Hedrick was one of the first veteran moonshiners to truly embrace Sugarlands when we opened our doors."

He added, "Gaining the stamp of approval from Jim Tom was instrumental in shaping the authenticity of Sugarlands, and we’re forever indebted to his support and friendship."

Information a planned memorial service was not made known to the public.
