These Montgomery Plaza shops may come down to make room for 595 more apartments

A proposed apartment complex with 595 units will knock out five stores in Fort Worth’s Montgomery Plaza if approved by the city.

The site, in the 300 to 400 blocks of Carroll Street, may soon become home to a development that includes new retail and apartments. The site is home to a Michael’s, Dollar Tree, Office Depot, PetSmart and Five Below.

Plans flashed briefly on the screen for zoning commissioners at their July 13 meeting show the project will eliminate nearly 90,000 square feet of retail space in the center but add back 20,000 square feet. It’s unclear what retail shops will be included in the space that will be added back. The same slide showed the project will add 315 units in a five-story building and 280 units in a seven-story building.

Montgomery Plaza is home to multiple complexes, including Magnolia Park, Aviator West 7th and the Montgomery Plaza condominiums.

Project officials initially sought a 30-day continuance but zoning commissioners voted to extend it to 60 days after hearing concerns from constituents on the area’s ability to handle the traffic the project would bring.

“The cultural district is about to be turned into the high-density district,” said nearby resident Robert Schartz.

Case manager Monica Lafitte with the city’s Development Services department and the city’s economic development and zoning offices didn’t immediately return messages or phone calls for comment Monday afternoon.

Georgia Misoulis, a managing director of acquisitions and dispositions with Montgomery Plaza owner KIMCO Realty Coorperation, forwarded the Star-Telegram to its media team, which didn’t immediately return a phone call.
