Monomoy School Committee race on Harwich town election ballot

Voters in Harwich will decide who will sit on the Monomoy Regional School Committee during Tuesday's annual town election.

Both Bre A. Rose and Ann Marie Varella are running for one three-year seat on the eight-member committee. Current incumbent Terry Russell is not seeking another term.

Rose is the parent of a student currently in the district and worked in early childhood education for more than 25 years. She is a member of the Monomoy Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Advisory Council and also serves on the Cape Cod NAACP and MLK Action Team.

"I am a woman of color, I want to ensure our voices are heard and children and families that have been marginalized have someone advocating for them," said Rose, noting that the schools are "doing a good job ... but one training is not going to do it."

Varella works in the Monomoy Regional School District and has 20 years of experience teaching mathematics, according to the district website. She could not be immediately reached for comment.

More on the School Committee race, contested library race

Four people, including incumbents Joan A. McCarty and Jeannie S. Wheeler and new faces Lynn Slanagan Budell and Patricia Larkin Murray, are running for three spots as Brooks Free Library Trustees.

Voters will also decide a ballot question on Tuesday asking if the town should be exempt from Proposition 2 1/2 for the town's allocable share of the bond issued by the Monomoy Regional School District to pay to renovate the outside siding of Monomoy Regional Middle School.

The full cost of the project is $2.5 million. About 75% of the project will be paid for by Harwich while the rest will come from Chatham, but the whole amount needs to be appropriated.

The bond has been approved by town meeting voters in both towns.
