New Monogatari Anime Revealed As Mystery Aniplex Project

Monogatari Off Monster teaser key art

This week, Aniplex has been teasing a new anime, and nobody really knew what it was. The hints provided were cryptic at best, with strange websites adorned with single letters. Now, Aniplex has lifted the lid on the upcoming project and fans are very excited.

Aniplex revealed that the anime project it’s been hinting at this week is none other than a new adaptation of Monogatari. The project was teased with websites bearing little more than a big O and a big M, and now we know what these mean: the new project will be an adaptation of Monogatari’s Off Season and Monster Season.

The company released a teaser trailer announcing the new adaptation, showing clips of previous series of the anime and some key visuals of the new adaptation, before revealing that the new adaptation of Off Season and Monster Season was starting production this year.

Monogatari was originally a series of light novels released in Japan by Nisio Isin, whose work on the series has landed him as one of the best-selling authors in Japan. The series, which is still ongoing, has been adapted into a few different seasons of anime, as well as a couple of prequel movies, all of which were animated by Shaft.

Shaft has been confirmed to be working on the Monster and Off Seasons adaptation, but it’s not known yet if it will be a full series like some of the earlier adaptations or a series of movies like the prequels. We also don’t have a release date or even a release window of any kind.

When it does eventually come, it’s likely to be released on Crunchyroll in the West. That’s because Aniplex is a subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment Japan, which alongside Sony Pictures owns Crunchyroll. It’s a bit of a complicated corporate structure, honestly, but the main thing is that it’ll probably come to Crunchyroll.
