Monkeypox cases by state: Track the virus in NC and across US with interactive map

CDC/Dataherald

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is tracking the outbreak of the monkeypox virus that is spreading in the United States.

On Thursday, Aug. 4, the Biden administration declared monkeypox a public health emergency. The announcement came during a briefing with the Department of Health and Human Services.

The virus is spread mostly through close, intimate contact with someone who has monkeypox, according to the CDC.

The emergency declaration follows the World Health Organization (WHO) announcement in July that monkeypox is a public health emergency of international concern.

The chart below, using data from the CDC, shows monkeypox cases by state. The highest case counts are in New York and California.

As of data available on Aug. 3, North Carolina has 72 confirmed cases.

The data in the graphic below is interactive (click on or hover over a state to see data) and will automatically update.

The CDC has information to help you to prevent getting monkeypox and to lower your risk during sex. Vaccination is recommended for people who have been exposed to monkeypox and people who are at higher risk of being exposed to monkeypox.

Monkeypox symptoms

Symptoms of monkeypox, according to the CDC, include:

  • Fever

  • Headache

  • Muscle aches and backache

  • Swollen lymph nodes

  • Chills

  • Exhaustion

  • Respiratory symptoms (e.g. sore throat, nasal congestion, or cough)

  • A rash that may be located on or near the genitals or anus but could also be on other areas like the hands, feet, chest, face, or mouth.

    • The rash will go through several stages, including scabs, before healing.

    • The rash can look like pimples or blisters and may be painful or itchy.

People may experience only a few of the symptoms above, and symptoms typically start within 3 weeks of exposure. A rash usually develops 1-4 days after flu-like symptoms.

Spread: Monkeypox can be spread from the time symptoms start until the rash has healed, all scabs have fallen off, and a fresh layer of skin has formed, says the CDC.

Monkeypox illness typically lasts 2-4 weeks.
