Money magazine names Iowa's Veridian among best banks and credit union in Midwest

Veridian Credit Union has new recognition to boast about in the competition between Iowa's leading financial institutions.

Money magazine in an annual evaluation named Veridian among the top five banks and credit unions in the Midwest for 2023-24, specifically for having the best rates. The Waterloo-based credit union, with at least 10 Des Moines metro locations, is the only Iowa-headquartered institution to make the list. The one rated best overall in the Midwest, Wintrust Bank of Illinois, has a mortgage office in West Des Moines.

According to the National Credit Union Service Organization, Veridian ranks second in assets in Iowa to North Liberty's GreenState Credit Union, which also has several Des Moines metro locations, and ahead of Dupaco Community Credit Union of Dubuque, which has a location in Grimes.

Also this year, a Forbes ranking of the best credit unions in each state included Dupaco in fourth place in Iowa and Veridian in fifth, with Community 1st of Ottumwa, Ascentra of Bettendorf and Community Choice of Johnston in first, second and third places, respectively. GreenState, formerly University of Iowa Community Credit Union, has made the list in previous years.
