Monday temperatures tie record in Austin for lowest on Dec. 11 since 1978

Austin is colder than ever, literally.

Temperatures reached 24 degrees at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport on Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service Austin/San Antonio office. It tied the record for coldest temperature ever recorded Dec. 11, with the original record being set in 1978.

Despite the record low, temperatures in Austin are expected to rise slightly Monday and Tuesday before dropping during the rest of the work week. Frigid temperatures Sunday night prompted the city to open cold weather shelters for the first time this winter.

Rain is likely Thursday and Friday, with chances sitting at 40% Thursday afternoon and evening and 70% Friday. There is a slight chance of thunderstorms early morning to midday Friday.
