Monday is the tax deadline. Here's what you need to do

Time is running out to file taxes before the April 15 deadline.

Refer to the sections below to learn everything you need to know about requesting an extension, filing your taxes and when to expect your refund.

How to get a tax extension

Need an extension? Fill out a request for an extra six months (Tuesday, Oct. 15) to complete your return.

Filing your taxes late may result in a penalty or interest, and, even if you do request an extension, you'll still need to pay the taxes you owe by their deadline.

By using the IRS Free File tool you can request an automatic tax-filing extension.

You can also get an extension while making your tax payment. Do this by paying all or part of your estimated income tax dues and indicating that the payment is for an extension. This saves you from filing a separate extension form.
