Mom Says She's Not Guilty of Upstaging Son's Wedding with Her 50th Birthday Party: 'Not Going to Tone It Down'
"In my social circle your 50th birthday is a huge deal," the anonymous poster wrote on Reddit
A woman is going viral after sharing that she doesn't feel guilt for "outshining" her son's wedding with her 50th birthday party, writing in a post shared to Reddit that her party was "what people were talking about."
"In my social circle your 50th birthday is a huge deal," the anonymous poster writes. "I haven’t celebrated my birthday for a while. My last real birthday party was sweet sixteen. Overall I have been saving for this party for years and all the family knows."
The poster adds that, roughly a year ago, her son and now daughter-in-law told her that they had planned their wedding for a week after her birthday party.
Knowing that her party would be "a big deal," the poster writes that she told her son that she was "not going to tone it down and he said he didn’t care."
As predicted, the poster writes that her 50th birthday was an over-the-top affair.
"My party has over 100 guest [sic] and had a lot of bells and whistles," she writes, adding that due to her son's wedding occurring so quickly after, "both events got compared."
But during the wedding, she writes that things seemed off.
"My son and [daughter-in-law] were cold to me during the wedding. I got a call from my son and it basically boiled down to I need to apologize for outshining their wedding," she writes. "That people were calling his event cheap and overall seemed to prefer my event."
She continues: "I told him I am not apologizing, that I warned him months ago and he said he was fine with the party. That it is not my fault that it was upstaged by my party. They chose the date knowing how those parties are."
In the end, both the woman's son and her daughter-in-law told her she "was a huge jerk."
While most commenters on the post said the woman wasn't in the wrong, many argued that she would be wise to find a new social circle.

"It's not awesome that people in your lives were judging your birthday party against your son's wedding. That isn't okay," wrote one.
Wrote another: "WHO would ever be so rude and ungracious as to attend a wedding and then call it cheap and subpar, compared to the groom's mother's birthday party? Who ARE these people and why would you continue to socialize with them?"
