Mom Hides Medicine in Ham and Bulldog Refuses to Leave the Refrigerator Hoping for More

Having to give a dog medicine can be a real pain (no pun intended), and most of us try to hide it in a special treat that we know our dog will enjoy. Gary is a very stubborn English Bulldog who knows what he wants. He's having to take medication right now, so mom has been wrapping it into pieces of ham to get him to take it. Turns out, Gary's a fan of ham and has been hanging out at the fridge hoping for more!

Mom starts the video, posted on Sunday, September 1st, by trying to explain to Gary that he only gets ham when he gets his medicine, in the morning and at night. She tells him hanging out at the refrigerator and waiting for ham cannot be his new life, but he disagrees. Listen in as the conversation goes on and watch to see what he does at the end of the video.

I can't help but wonder how long Gary sat there! Did mom finally cave and give him more ham? I'm guessing not. Did he finally give up and go play? I'm guessing not! English Bulldogs love to eat, and Gary is no exception!

Commenter @Malou Tinoso shared what Gary was probably thinking throughout the conversation, "Neighbor’s treat doesn’t count! You can give me more ham without the medication. I don't want to play!!! I’ll guard the fridge until you give in!" LOL!" @Normansoccer99 pointed out that Gary was "playing the long game". @Freddy5392 and many others had this to say about neighbor treats, "Definitely can't count Gary's side hustle "neighbor treats"!" Another person had my favorite comment, "“You can’t stand at the fridge all day!” Gary: “Watch me !!” and Gary's mom's reply cracked me up, "He’s sleeping next to it right now LOL!"

How To Successfully Give Dogs Medicine

At some point or other, we all have to give our dogs medicine. They normally will eat anything (even things they're not supposed to), but if you try to give them medicine, they refuse. Many of us have success like Gary's mom by tricking them and hiding the medication in foods they don't normally get (cheese is the go-to at our house), but sometimes dogs figure that out. If you go this route, make sure the foods you are bribing them with, I mean using as a treat, are safe for dogs.

What other options are there? Turn medicine time into treat time and use a high value one at that. Act excited about giving your dog medication and make it a game. If possible, hide the medication in a favorite treat or wet food (compact wet food works best; put the pill in the center and roll it into a ball). Make them follow all of the normal commands you give them before they normally get a treat. Once they finish it, give them a high value or 'special' treat that they don't normally get and praise them.

The American Kennel Club suggests getting a little help by using a pet piller, "Pill devices place the medication in your dog’s mouth, so that you don’t have to expose your fingers to danger. A dog’s tongue has a hump, and in order to succeed in getting them to swallow the pill, you need to place it behind the hump. Once you’ve done that, close their jaws and gently stroke their throat in a downward motion to encourage them to swallow the pill."

These methods are all worth trying, but if they don't do the trick, talk to your vet to see if flavored pills or liquid medication are available. It might take some trial and error, but eventually you'll find the method that works best for your pooch.
