Mom’s Cute Joke About French Bulldogs’ Ears Has Everybody Cracking Up

How well does your dog listen? Many dogs have 'selective' hearing and only listen when it benefits them. I know that's true of my puppy! Winston is a French bulldog, and his mom says that his ears only have one purpose, but it's not so that he can hear!

Mom shared a video at the beginning of May explaining what Winston - and other Frenchies - ears are for. In the video she's playing with his big ears as he looks at the camera, clearly annoyed. Winston's mom says his ears are decorative only, and more specifically not used for hearing!

Do you agree with what Winston's mom said? I think it's pretty accurate for a lot of dogs, including mine! Commenters agreed with Winston's mom's assessment, one even shared, "So true. I have a deaf Frenchie and he’s no different than the ones who can hear." @Michelle S agreed, "Truer words have never been spoken — I always tell people they are purely ornamental and have very selective hearing — crinkling of food wrapper can be heard from a mile away; listening = Nope." and @Kiki added, "Truth. unless you say "ride, snack, treat, eat, or walk"."

Is It a Frenchie or a Pug?

Commenter @Steph also agreed and said, "Truth, Pugs too!" French Bulldogs and Pugs look rather similar because both have flat faces, wrinkles and small build, but that is where the physical similarities end.  One of the most obvious ways to tell which is which is by their ears. Pugs have rounded, floppy ears while French Bulldogs have “bat ears” that stand naturally straight up and are much larger than their heads. Their tails are also different: Frenchies' tails are short and straight while Pugs have adorable curly, pig-like tails. French bulldogs and pugs both have underbites, but a French bulldog's is more pronounced.

Another key difference between the two breeds is how active they are. Frenchies are known for their athleticism and pugs are more low-key and chill. Pugs tend to be louder and more vocal of the two. Frenchies are very spunky and like to be the boss, which can make them less compatible with other pets or small children. They also have a shorter lifespan than that of Pugs; they live an average of 9-11 years while Pugs can live 12-14 years.

As with all dog breeds, there are pros and cons that go with them. While one of these dog breeds is not "better" than the other, one might be better suited for your family and lifestyle. That's why it is so important to do your research before choosing the pet that's right for you.
