All About Molly Yeh's Husband—and How 'Girl Meets Farm' Started as Girl Meets Boy

Girl Meets Farm star Molly Yeh

Molly Yeh's husband has a lot in common with Dwight Schrute.

The Girl Meets Farm star famously moved from New York City to her Minnesota beet farm (cue The Office theme song) with Nick Hagen, whose family owned the property.

Hagen explained that while living in New York, they were homebodies ordering in all the time instead of exploring and enjoying the nightlife that city life offered.

It was a trip to the countryside that made them rethink their approach to life and location.

“We kind of looked at each other and said ‘Should we move?'" Hagen recalled to Ag Week. The answer for both was "yes," and the rest is history.

It turns out that the ones who grow crops together grow together (or something like that). Get to know their love story.

How did Molly Yeh meet her husband Nick?

Yeh and Hagen met when they were music students at Juilliard in New York City. Hagen was a senior studying trombone, while Yeh majored in percussion. They were acquaintances when they were at Juilliard, but didn't begin dating until after they graduated.

Hagen had moved from New York City back to work on his family farm in East Grand Forks, Minnesota, after he finished school in 2009, but returned to New York City in 2011, telling Ag Week he felt like he had "unfinished business" in the Big Apple. He and Yeh reconnected and dated for several years before making their way back to the Midwest. The couple married on Dec. 27, 2014, on the family farm.

Yeh and Hagen have two children together.

Their daughter Bernadette Rosemary Yeh Hagen was born on March 30, 2019. Nicknamed Bernie, Yeh and Hagen's first restaurant, Bernie's, was named after their eldest daughter.

“Bernie is named after Nick’s great-great-grandpa Bernt, who came from Norway and started the Hagen farm, and my great-grandpa Bernard, who came over from Hungary,” Yeh told PEOPLE. “Rosemary was my mom’s mom.”

The couple welcomed their second daughter, Ira Dorothy Yeh Hagen, on Feb. 20, 2022.

"I think she looks just like a tiny Bernie and also a tiny grandpa," Yeh joked in an Instagram announcing Ira's birth. "Dorothy is after Dorothea, the original matriarch of the farm (Nick’s great great grandma), and Ira is because our friend Jamie suggested it and we loved it! Bernie is taking to her role as big sister beautifully, introducing Ira to all of the best things like tickles, magic wands, tutus, and Frozen songs. we’re so excited to be a family of four!"

Is Molly Yeh's husband really a farmer?

Yes, he is! Hagen loves farming and does it full-time.

The Hagen family farm grows sugar beets and wheat, and they rent out land to other farmers who grow navy beans on the property, Ag Week reports. Hagen told the magazine that while his work is very different from playing trombone, they do have some things in common.

“The thing I like about farming is that it is so multifaceted. I think about music and the sort of path you take to achieve success in music. It’s about being regimented and disciplined and consistent and very focused,” he explained.

The main difference, he said, is having wiggle room.

“It’s a far cry from the world of music. But the world of music was focused on perfection. It was such a controlled environment. It was just you, your instrument, and can you execute?" he said. “Once I began farming, I realized it’s pure creativity. Mother Nature is throwing something new at you every day. You’re thinking on your feet.”
