On Wednesday, superstar third baseman Kris Bryant signed a seven-year, $182 million contract with the Colorado Rockies heading into the 2022 MLB season.

If this news surprises you, you’re not alone.

According to ESPN MLB insider Buster Olney, most of the baseball industry is “shocked” by this blockbuster move.

“On a scale of 1 to 10, the industry shock over the Rockies’ deal with Kris Bryant has been turned up to 11,” Olney wrote on Twitter.

This signing comes as a surprise to many around the league considering the fact that the Rockies traded All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado to St. Louis just last year. Not only did the organization dump their franchise star, they were also forced to eat $51 million of his remaining contract. To turn around and pay a comparable third baseman $182 million the next season is head-scratching to say the least.

Fans and analysts around the league are also confused about the current situation with star shortstop Trevor Story. With this huge deal for Bryant, it appears the Colorado organization won’t even try to retain Story in free agency this year.

In 2021, Bryant logged a slash line of .265/.353/.481 in a split season with the Chicago Cubs and San Francisco Giants. The 2016 NL MVP will look to improve those stats and live up to his massive contract with the Rockies this coming season.
