The MLB trade deadline is three days away, and Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer is one of the biggest names to watch as the week progresses.

Scherzer, who turns 37 years old today, is a free agent at the end of the season. The three-time Cy Young winner is the type of rental acquisition that can swing a pennant race.

As a result, any team that finds itself in contention should at least be open to dealing for Scherzer, assuming the Nationals move him. According to a new report, the veteran right-hander “strongly prefers the West Coast.”

Naturally, this should pique the interest of the three NL West powerhouses–the Dodgers, Giants and Padres. But the Tampa Bay Rays are also reportedly in on Scherzer, and there are several other franchises that would love to land the eight-time All-Star.

The MLB world is buzzing with Scherzer talk today as the countdown to the deadline rolls on.

Scherzer earned another All-Star Game invite this season and has been his usual effective self. The Nationals are likely to strip down their roster in the coming days as they prepare for a rebuild two years after winning the World Series.

We’ll see where Scherzer winds up when the dust settles.
