Since it was discovered that the Houston Astros used technology to steal signs and give themselves an advantage during the 2017 and 2018 seasons, baseball lovers have blistered the franchise. With the return of fans to stadiums this year, the animosity towards the organization has lingered.

But not everyone thinks that the Astros should continue to be target of fierce criticism. Among that group is six-time All-Star Joey Votto.

In an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show, the Cincinnati Reds first baseman made clear that he thought it was time to move on from shaming the Astros for stealing signs. He said that it “baffled” him that there are still some fans who believe Houston was the only team cheating at the time.

“The idea that they (the Astros) were the only ones doing something wrong baffles me,” Votto told Patrick on Wednesday’s show, per Joe Rivera of Sporting News.

Votto’s comments echo those that others in and around baseball have said since Major League Baseball revealed the results of its investigation in January 2020. The Astros might’ve gotten caught, but that doesn’t mean they were the only ones cheating.

Although some fans in ballparks clearly haven’t forgiven Houston, many on social media, including almost every Astros fan, are ready to move on like Votto.

There’s definitely value in listening to a player like Votto, who has played 15 years in the league and been one of the most well-respected voices for some time. The Astros have caught flack for over a year and a half now, so it might be time for fans who are at games to dial back their frustrations.

However, it’s understandable why many are still upset. Houston clearly crossed a line by bringing technology into the fold. While other teams might’ve been doing something similar, the Astros got caught and now have to deal with the consequences.

Considering that Votto isn’t the only one to make comments of this nature, it’s possible that MLB still has a major problem on its hands. Seeking an advantage over other teams is one thing, but escalating sign stealing to a level like the Astros did should have repercussions for any club.
