The New York Mets’ injury woes continued on Tuesday night. Starter Marcus Stroman, who has had an All-Star level season for the team, left after just one full inning, laboring through 21 pitches and walking two batters.

He was pulled early in the second inning of last night’s game against the Atlanta Braves, favoring his left hip. He attempted some practice throws from the mound, but was clearly uncomfortable, and left the game.

It is not what the Mets need at all, after losing fifth-starter Joey Lucchesi, who needs Tommy John surgery, and the occasional issues that ace Jacob deGrom has dealt with. Taijuan Walker, the Mets’ third-starter who has also been excellent for most of the year, has been banged up at times.

According to Jon Heyman, the early news appears to be decent for New York. Marcus Stroman is set to have an MRI today, but the Mets “seem hopeful” about his status.

At 37-31 after last night’s loss, the Mets still have a four-game lead in the NL East, over the Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, and Washington Nationals. That is the biggest lead of any division in baseball.

The Mets have accomplished that despite a wild few months of injuries. Just this week, Stroman and Lucchesi went down, as did long reliever Robert Gsellman with a lat injury, and reliever Jeurys Familia with a hip injury. Backup catcher Tomas Nido is day-to-day. Starting outfielder Brandon Nimmo is working his way off the 10-day DL, as is Michael Conforto. Third baseman/outfielder J.D. Davis has missed most of the season.

The team has also been without offseason acquisition Carlos Carrasco, who was expected to be a big part of the rotation, and Noah Syndergaard, who had a setback during rehab from his UCL injury. They hope to have both back at some point this year but the prognosis is longer term for them.

Shortstop Francisco Lindor and catcher James McCann, the team’s two most notable offseason pickups, are the only major position players that haven’t dealt with some sort of injury this year, but both of them have struggled to break out of early season slumps. The fact that the Mets have cobbled together a first place record is pretty impressive, but at some point they need to get healthy.
