Longtime Toronto Blue Jays broadcaster Buck Martinez is stepping away from the booth after being diagnosed with cancer.

Martinez announced his health update through a statement on Twitter for Sportsnet, the Blue Jays’ flagship station.

“I’ve been so honoured and privileged to have the support of Blue Jays fans, colleagues, staff and players since I arrived here in 1981, and that continued support through this next challenge means the world to me,” Martinez said. “I’m grateful for a tremendous medical team, who has given me great optimism that I will come through this with flying colours.”

Martinez also said he hopes to rejoin Sportsnet later in the season, but will be “watching from the sidelines” for the time being.

An MLB catcher from 1969-86 with the Kansas City Royals, Milwaukee Brewers and Blue Jays, Martinez began calling Toronto games in 1987. He later worked for ESPN, MASN and TBS before rejoining the Blue Jays’ booth in 2010.

Martinez also had a brief stint as Toronto’s manager in 2001-02. We wish him all the best as he approaches his cancer battle.
