Mizzou football's ranking in AP, coaches poll takes slight hit after Georgia loss

Mizzou football’s AP Top 25 ranking took a slight hit following its 30-21 loss to top-ranked Georgia on Saturday in Athens, Georgia, as the Tigers fell two spots to No. 16 in Sunday’s poll. Missouri also fell in the US LBM Coaches Poll, dropping a single spot to No. 15.

Among two-loss teams, Missouri ranks fifth behind Utah, Oregon State, Oklahoma State and Tennessee.

The Tigers were selected No. 12 in the College Football Playoff committee’s first rankings of the season. They are likely to fall in the rankings after the loss to the Bulldogs, who were No. 2 behind Ohio State.

Voters don’t seem to have been too put off by Missouri’s close loss to UGA, which is now the nation’s top-ranked team in the AP poll for 21 weeks running.

The Tigers held a lead in the third quarter at Sanford Stadium, and later had the ball at midfield midway through the fourth quarter, down six points and with a chance to take a late lead. Then UGA defensive lineman Nazir Stackhouse picked off Mizzou quarterback Brady Cook, and the Bulldogs turned the turnover into a field goal to put Mizzou out of sight.

Missouri next faces Tennessee this upcoming Saturday in Columbia. The Volunteers hammered UConn 59-3 on Saturday. Former Missouri offensive coordinator and current UT coach Josh Heupel’s team are No. 12 in coaches poll, up four spots, and supplanted Missouri at No. 14 in the latest AP poll, which was a five-place rise.

The television networks announced earlier Sunday that MU-UT, officially now a top-20 matchup, will kick off at 2:30 p.m. and air on CBS.
