Mitch McConnell, Gretchen Whitmer on ‘hit list’ of Wisconsin gunman who killed judge: police

A Wisconsin ex-con who tied up and executed a judge in his own home had a hit list that included Mitch McConnell, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers, authorities said.

Douglas Uhde, 56, broke into retired Wisconsin Judge John Roemer’s home and killed him Friday morning in New Lisbon, police said.

Uhde is a career criminal with a record going back at least 20 years, including being sentenced by Roemer to six years behind bars on weapons charges, officials said. He was released from his last prison sentence in April 2020.

After a four-hour standoff, officers found Uhde suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in the basement of Roemer’s house, Wisconsin state police said. Uhde was hospitalized Friday in critical condition.

Investigators said Uhde’s hit list had more than a dozen names on it, including Roemer, 68. Cops discovered the list in Uhde’s car, which was parked outside the former judge’s home.

Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul said Friday that the shooting appeared to be a “targeted act” and the list included members of the criminal justice system connected to “some sort of court case or court cases.”

When officers entered Roemer’s home, they found him zip-tied to a chair and dead from a gunshot wound, police said.

Police in Wisconsin contacted all the people on the list, though they’re not believed to be in any danger with Uhde hospitalized. Whitmer’s office confirmed that she was on the list.

Whitmer was previously the subject of an alleged kidnapping plot involving right-wing militia members. The case against the reported plotters didn’t hold up in court. Two were acquitted and two will likely face a new trial.
